20 Safety Tips for Budget Travelers

September 30th, 2010 Comments off

1) When taking taxis from an airport to your hotel, travel in the more expensive airport taxis and ensure that the drivers have official identification. Never take a taxi waiting outside the airport grounds. I know this sounds extreme, but it is by far better to be safe then sorry. 2) When traveling from your hotel to the airport, go with a taxi recommended by the hotel. Again, taxi’s can be very dangerous. I can’t express that enough. 3) Try not to arrive in a new city or town late at night. This can just go wrong in a number of ways. It is much easier getting checked in during the day time and security at night in certain areas is just horrendous. 4) Travel in a group if possible. Since when is traveling in numbers not a good idea? 5) Learn the basics in the local language before you arrive. Don’t expect that people will speak English. English is becoming more widely spoken these days, but you want to be sure. You should always check on these things before your arrival. 6) Keep your valuables hidden. A money belt is great if it is an option that you willing to look into. There are many different styles of money belt. One of the most popular is an “over the shoulder” style wallet on a strap that you were underneath your top. This makes it very difficult for a thief to make off with your valuables. 7) Avoid going on your own to remote areas/ruins where tourist would be expected to go. Seek local advice or take a guide. 8) Read the guide books and talk with other tourists to find out which areas are best avoided. 9) When leaving discos late at night take a taxi home no matter how close your hostel is. Outside most discos you’ll find a street vendor selling cigarettes. Usually these people know all the taxi drivers and can recommend a safe one. 10) When arriving in a new town, keep to your original plan and stay in the hostel that you have decided on. Don’t let the taxi driver persuade you that your hostel is fully booked and that he knows a cheaper and better one. He’ll be working on commission and the hostel probably won’t be in a safe part of town. 11) Even better, when arriving lane/train in a new city, try to reserve your hotel in advance, preferably with a hotel that has an airport/station collection service. 12) Don’t wear expensive looking jewelry. 13) On public transport have your day pack close to you at all times, preferably with the straps around your legs or padlocked to the luggage rack. On buses your backpack will normally go outside, either on top of the roof or in the external luggage compartments. On long distance buses ask for a receipt for your bags. On short rides just keep a careful eye out each time the bus stops to off-load bags. In the event of having your bags stolen, stay with the bus – you will probably require a declaration from the bus company accepting responsibility for the loss in order to claim any money from your insurance company. 14) Leave your valuables in your hotel safe when making day trips or longer tours. Obtain a receipt not just for your money belt/wallet etc. but for its contents, with each item listed. 15) If you have to leave your passport and credits cards together, place the credit card in a sealed envelope and sign your name across the flap. This way when you return you will know that nothing has been tampered with. 16) If planning on going to market areas, crowded streets, fiestas etc. don’t go with all your valuables. Leave them in the hotel. If you’re planning on buying something expensive keep your money safely in a money belt. Try to be discreet when opening it! To protect small change in your pockets you can stuff a handkerchief in after. 17) If the pavements are really crowded, especially in market areas, walk in the road. 18) If you suspect someone is following you, stop and stare them in the eye until they go. If you really get a bad feeling about a place, go with your first instincts and leave. Bag slashing is rare nowadays but for added safety you can wear your day pack on your chest. 19) If it’s on your back try to walk without stopping. If you need to stop, sway your pack gently from side to side so that you can feel if anyone is tampering with it. 20) When putting your bag down on the floor, to take a photo or just to sit in a café, remember to put your foot through the strap. Not only will it be impossible to snatch, you also won’t forget it! This is the most common type of theft – tourists forgetting bags in cafes and on returning to ask if anyone has seen it, you’ve guessed it, it’s gone.

How to Be Prepared to Travel to Iran

September 30th, 2010 Comments off

You can travel to Iran to expand your perception and outlook toward the world in which you are living. To learn about different cultures, food, history, architecture, languages, traditions, religions, etc, you need to make this journey. It is important to be prepared to travel to destinations like Iran. Many countries are happy to see international tourism growing in their lands. It is a way of enhancing their economies, creating jobs and opening the influx of foreign currencies into their market. Iran is one of those countries where people always look at travelers with big welcoming smile on their faces. They feel the impact of tourism on their everyday lives. Is Iran a Secure Travel Destination? Even in some popular civilized travel destinations you may easily become victims of pickpockets and criminals who will take your wallet and bag, attack you to take away your valuable items like ornaments, or rip you off when you pay taxi fare or other services. To be realistic, we are living in a world where good and bad could be at one place. Sometimes, you love to see some fabulous temple, city, landscape, lake, etc, but you have to take particular security measures to be able to enjoy visiting what you want. The rate of criminality in Iran is by no means higher than other places in the world. On the contrary, in many regards, you can regard Iran as much safer place than some European countries. Precautionary Measures Before you travel to Iran, the best way to protect yourselves is to be alert and book your tour package through trustworthy travel agencies. Iran could be some unfamiliar destination for many as there is some unfair negative tone against Iran and Iranians. It is always better to have closer relations with Iranians to know them best. Make sure that you are familiar with Iranian traditions and customs before you start your trip. Reading the trip to Iran, travel tips and advice could be very helpful to decide what you need to bring with you, like clothes and electronic gadgets. You can also contact your travel agent if you have any questions while you are in your trip preparation stage. Arrangements before You Travel to Iran Make sure you plan your arrival and departure times well-scheduled. Most of the flights arrive in Iran early in the morning and leave a couple of hours after that. As you may get to your hotel before sunrise, you need to make sure that your hotel rooms are booked for you from the day before. Also, before departing Iran, as there is a long time between hotels check-out time and departure flights, you have to make sure that your room is booked for you for one more night. As part of arranging your travel to Iran, tour operators can help you organize some of the services you need. They could be: O Domestic flights O Tour guide O Required means of transportation O Transfers from and to hotels and airports O CIP service O Visa processing O Hotel reservation vouchers O etc Take Good Care of Your Belonging To travel to Iran, like in many other countries, you need to have documents like passport, visa, tour itinerary, print of the correspondences, driving license, particular medicine prescriptions, travel insurance, etc. What is important is not to carry or even keep them all handy. Only bring those documents with you that you are sure you will need to show or use. To be on the safe side, professional travelers, take a few bags and wallets and place their valuable items and money in them. Of course, many believe that it is always better not to keep all the items at on place. How to Support Yourselves Financially in Iran Due to the sanctions against Iran, there are no international credit card services inside Iran. ATMs do not accept Visa, Master, Dinner’s Club, American Express, etc. Travelers’ checks are not accepted as it is not possible to cash them. Carrying large amount of cash to Iran is not either recommendable. So what is the solution? Most of the travel agents have got some bank account outside Iran and may ask you to wire a deposit or complete tour fee to those accounts. Some may require you to bring cash to pay them upon arrival. In such cases, you may want to pay when you arrive, get a receipt and relieve yourselves from any hassles of holding a large amount of cash with you. Inside Iran, upon arriving in Imam Khoemini International Airport (IKIA), there are exchange shops and banks that are open 24/7. The rates are also like what you may get inside Tehran. The difference is that you save a lot of time by exchanging there once you arrive. Tehran is a huge city with lots of traffic. Different shops are not always found at all neighborhoods of the city. You can get local cards from some banks inside Iran like: O Pasargad Bank O Saman Bank O Parsian Bank O etc. They are actually gift cards that are prepaid by you. Then, you can easily carry them with you during the trip and make payments almost everywhere and cash them at ATMs at all the cities and towns of Iran. Before leaving the country, you can cash all you have in your card and exchange it for the foreign currency you want. Eventually, the more travel tips you learn about Iran, the more prepared you will be to make a good journey to this country. So, try to get in touch with those who are experts inside the country.

West Virginia Vacation Cabins

September 30th, 2010 Comments off

Within this article I hope to give you some good advice on how to choose your West Virginia Vacation cabin.

Some important points to consider

* Availability (when is the peak season)

* Where are the best locations to spend your vacation?

* Where you can get the best cabin package for the money

Vacation Cabin Availability

The peak seasons for vacationing in West Virginia may not be the seasons that you suspect. Winter time in West Virginia offers a host of outdoor activities that attracts locals and visitors to certain coveted destinations. Snowshoe Ski Resort, Winterplace and Canaan Valley are certain to be booked during the winter months. So make certain that you prepare ahead of time and reserve a cabin several months prior to your trip.

Fall foliage is a major attraction in West Virginia. The vibrant colors that explode from the mountains are some of not the best in America. So be prepared around the end of September till the middle of October to run into cabins that are already booked. Later in the fall you will see that the reservations are not as full as most of the foliage has dropped to the ground and folks are getting ready for the winter season.

In the heat of summer you will find that folks love to get away to shady retreats while school is out, especially in the early months of summer such as June and July. Even though this is one of the most pleasant times to visit the lush forests of West Virginia it is also one of the most dangerous times for poisonous snakes such as the copperhead and rattlesnakes that inhabit the rocks and leaves throughout the woods.

One of the best times to visit the mountains and forests of West Virginia and to rent a vacation cabin is in middle to late spring. This is a wonderful time of the year, if you can get away. During this season you will be able to enjoy serenity, peace and quiet in a spectacular display of wild flowers and foliage that comes to life after the winter months. White Dogwood trees, Rhododendrons, Wild Azalea’s and other wonderful colors of nature give nature lovers and outdoorsmen a very beautiful environment for relaxation.

Spring may be a little cool in West Virginia so make certain that you plan accordingly and bring some warmer clothes. Heavy winter Jackets are usually too much and can be too hot, but it is good to have one in case the occasional snow storm comes up unexpectedly. A thinner insulated wind breaker is very comfortable to wear when hiking and does not burden you down when going for longer treks.

Where are the best vacation cabin locations

for your vacation in West Virginia?

One of the most frustrating things that can happen to the vacationer is to plan your vacation ahead of time, get everything in order for you to leave, and plan the best time of year to go and then once you get there; you realize that it was not at all what you thought it was.

West Virginia is by far one of the most beautiful states in our country. However, just like any other place there are good areas and bad areas that I would not want to visit unless I absolutely had to. It is critical to your vacation planning, to research the destination and surrounding environment so that you can get the most out of you time and have a good experience; that way you will want to come back.

I highly recommend that you do at least these three things to research your destination.

1. Search the internet about the area

There are bound to be at least half a dozen websites that expound on your destination. It does not hurt to post a message or two in a message board to gain other peoples perspectives.

2. Try to find pictures of the area during the season that you are planning to visit.

It is not good to see an area with wonderful winter snow or colorful fall leaves if you are planning to visit in the spring. So try to find a website that will give you a good idea of what the entire environment is like. One of my personal favorites is www. ForestWander. com this nature photographer displays various nature and rural West Virginia pictures from each of the four seasons. ForestWander Nature Photography also travels all over the state searching for the most scenic destinations so this may prove very useful as a guide to the most beautiful nature areas.

3. Purchase a local State Map

If you can find somewhere that sells a detailed WV state map. This map will include rural roads as well as all the national and state parks. This gives you a very comprehensive guide to the area and can really help you if you are lost. In addition to a state map I do highly recommend the purchase and use of a GPS system. This can save you time and gas money when searching for your favorite state park which often is very remote.

Where you can get the best log cabin package for the money

This guide is by no means a price guide to log cabins but we do want to help you understand where the best deals are and how you can get a great price and have the amenities you need.

Often, folks think that if you are staying in a log cabin that it has to be primitive with no running water, no heating or air conditioning and no TV or telephone. While this can be true for certain cabins it is not true for all cabins.

The West Virginia park system offers vacation cabins that are primitive and cabins that have amenities. Of course the cabins which have the most conveniences of home will cost more but in order to weigh out the cost of your cabin you must first decide how much you want to “rough it”!

In my humble opinion I believe the privately owned log cabins are much nicer and much more comfortable as modern cabins than the state operated and owned cabins. Private Jacuzzi’s and hot tubs make a log cabin vacation rental very nice. When someone else has designed the cabin layout, not just for commercial purposes but added a touch of coziness and home; you tend to enjoy the stay much more than you would if it is just a commercial replica of every other cabin throughout the state.

You will find that the state owned and operated cabins will be a little less expensive than the privately owned cabins. Regardless of primitive or modern the cost will be a little less with the state cabins. There is however, steep competition between vacation cabin rental companies and other tourist lodging providers. Most privately owned cabin rental companies will allow you to make reservations online and provide detailed photographs of the outside and inside of the cabins. If the cabins are very nice outside and inside they will be proud and will display the images on their site. Usually, if the pictures do not show very much of the cabin or accompanying yard and surroundings then they are trying to hide something.

The prices for the cabins are almost always posted online and vary from season to season, as I mentioned previously. However, in a slow season a renter may tend to be negotiable with the renters fee. So it does not hurt to call the renter up and haggle a little on the price. You may find that you can save what it will cost you in gas for your trip.

In conclusion make certain that you research and plan your trip as far in advance as possible. This will allow you to make the most of your precious vacation time. A lot of us only get 2 or 3 weeks of vacation time each year and how many of us actually take vacation? I hope you enjoy your trip to West Virginia.

How Vacations Reduce Stress

September 30th, 2010 Comments off

Job issues, career paths, mortgages, debt and gas prices are some of the leading causes of stress effecting people around the world today. Vacations are very important to our physical and mental well being.
Whether the vacation is a weekend getaway or a full two-week vacation from everything stressful, make the most of it by doing nothing. Pay your bills before leaving home so you don’t have to worry about calling or going online to pay them while trying to relax. That’s the purpose of a vacation – to get away from it all. On the beach or an amusement park ride is not a good place for a cell phone or blackberry, leave those at home.
Sunshine
Sunshine can improve one’s mood, ward off depression, aid in sleep and even improve your sex life. Not only does the sun provide the skin with a healthy glow, it provides nutrients that essentially have a positive effect on many areas of life. Moderate sun exposure can raise vitamin D levels, reduces stress and helps our bodies recover from jet lag more quickly.
Fresh Air
Many people spend far more time indoors than outdoors. Sometimes this is not by choice. Demanding work or class schedules are leading reasons people spend most of their time indoors. Fresh air helps cleans our lungs better than any air purifier system available on the market today. Having the ability to breathe more easily increases the amount of oxygen provided to our cells. Increased oxygen means increased energy to do the things we need or want to do.
Play Time
Most adults do not take the time to play and enjoy themselves. Vacations provide a great opportunity to just let go and enjoy your time, whether on the beach or a theme park tour. Adults often ask how children have so much energy. Often the answer is simple, they take the time to play and enjoy life unlike their adult counterparts. The next time you take time for a vacation, make time to play and enjoy it.
Creativity
Don’t stick to a normal schedule when you’re on vacation! It is your vacation, your time off. Go to bed late and sleep late, enjoy breakfast in the afternoon or dinner at midnight. Be creative when planning one day to the next. Plan activities you enjoy. Don’t be worried about what others may think of your creative efforts, just enjoy your vacation.
Freedom
Vacations provide many forms of freedom; freedom from the 9 to 5, the commute, the office and best of all perhaps freedom from your alarm clock. Vacation time means no stressful schedule to maintain. Plan your vacation but do not make daily plans that take you out of your realm of relaxation. Vacation plans should include things you enjoy doing, not things you feel you need to do.
Relaxation
Brooks Gump, Ph. D. , assistant professor of psychology at Oswego said, ‘We concluded that skipping vacations could actually be dangerous to your health. Vacations have a protective effect because they help you reduce your load of stress, or at least allow you to take a break from the everyday stressors of the workplace. ‘
Researchers and doctors have assessed stress-related illnesses for years and the majority of them have come to the same conclusions; vacations are an essential part of maintaining good mental health as well as good physical health.
Vacation Locations Around the World
The British enjoy spending their vacation time in various locations in Spain and Europe. The Balearic Islands, Canary Islands, Spain, Hungary and Italy are some of the more popular vacation destinations, and for winter time ski holidays too in France and Andorra. Low-cost airlines throughout Europe allow the opportunity for Europeans to plan shorter, more frequent vacations and weekend getaways.
Florida, the Caribbean and other coastal areas are some of North America’s most popular vacation destinations. Theme parks around the United States are great destinations for overnight or weekend getaways. Many adventurous vacations are also available throughout the United States.

Travel Insurance Policies That Are Commonly Needed

September 30th, 2010 Comments off

Travel insurance and trip cancellation insurance are often used by businessmen to cover for the costs and the losses they incur if the travel could not take place as per schedule. As every other risk that a business is exposed to, not being able to travel for a particular meeting with a client due to bad weather, unavailability of flight or medical condition, is an equal risk which is why travel insurance is such a key part of the business budget and makes the costs more predictable and accountable compared to the accidental loss.

Travel insurance policies include a variety of benefits for the claimants depending on what they need and what they are paranoid of.

Trip cancellation insurance

Travel insurance often includes coverage for losses incurred by cancellation of the trip. The coverage usually includes such unforeseen events as emergency medical treatment, emergency medical evacuation, baggage and travel delays and other factors that forced you to cancel your plans affecting your purpose. Lost or stolen baggage coverage, travel assistance services during emergencies etc. will help you feel less anxious about the trip and the unfortunate events that could hamper the covered trip.

Sky Rescue

This feature in travel insurance usually covers medical evacuation coverage and could be purchased for oneself or for family.

Adventurous activities

If you are one of those people who not only love travelling but also likes to take part in many adventure activities like skiing, parasailing, bungee jumping and other athletic activities that could prove dangerous then you need to incorporate an extra clause in your travel insurance for coverage of adventure activities which will take care of medical costs for injuries sustained during such adventure.

Group insurance

This is a more economical way of protecting yourself on your trips. If more than a few people are going on the same trip with the same itinerary, then it is very much economical and also prudent to go for a group insurance which covers medical costs, adventure activities and trip cancellation costs for everyone who is part of the group.

This will cost you less compared to the individual travel insurance. It could happen often that one member of a travelling group is left behind or the trip is cancelled and all of them are missing their own plans.

Similarly, one could insure his or her family on the trip which will cover for their medical costs too with a coverage as high as 8,000,000 dollars on select premium policies. These kinds of policies are also available to those tourists who are visiting a country as part of the cultural exchange program of individuals travelling abroad. This is similar to the policies and coverage features available for students’ part of the exchange programs.

There are many benefits of international travel insurance that one can only realize on hindsight. Incurring a large loss because of unforeseen events on which you had no control is a risky thing compared to incorporating a small cost of playing safe and keeping everything under your budget through travel insurance.

If this can be you, possibly it’s time that you simply let go of a tiny manage, and seemed up travel agents on Google. For folks who’ve been arranging their personal travel for any decade now, the thought of returning to travel agency stone age might feel like a step again. Have not you always run to the notions that the travel agents can never ever have access to the sort of immediate customer costs you are able to get right at residence? In some circumstances, that might be true; but in the event you think that that’s the way it’s for every type of travel, you’ve been drinking a small bit of someone’s Kool-Aid. That’s only true for air travel, if that. Oxygen travel is intensely competitive, and has advanced on a track that is very independent of what you would discover for cruise travel. Your pleasant(?) local travel agents really should be much better equipped with deals and data for you personally, and ought to be capable to tailor a package for your particular requirements much better than anything on-line possibly could. But why should that be so? Why shouldn’t the Internet have immediate customer deals once they do market cruise packages? It’s pretty easy – the cruise strains see points in a different way, and choose heading by means of the traditional travel agency. A very good qualified travel program will often be ready to understand the sophisticated method it takes to put a cruise in concert, and to pick the correct type of company and cabin to go well with you. So far as cruises are concerned, the globe operates within a pre-Internet age. The agents nonetheless get fantastic commissions (as opposed to the couple of pennies they make with all the airlines), and you will discover incentives too. And so they provide you a complete company package – need to something go wrong with your cruise, the genuinely fantastic ones can effortlessly battle for you, and make items go nicely again. Travel agents typically have long-standing relationships with cruise traces; and it is form of symbiotic. The cruise traces depend on these associations, and will grant their businesses all kinds of special deals. Because these are offered to dignify the romantic relationship they’ve with the agents, they’re nothing you will uncover on any Internet travel site. You’ll be able to get totally free upgrades, credit when onboard, and they understand how to get you military reductions, senior discounts and reductions by travel market – factors that you would not even know to search for by yourself. All you need to go online for, are excellent travel agents to book as a result of. Examine for an company which has a Cruise Traces Worldwide Association accreditation; searching approximately for very good word-of-mouth need to serve you properly as well. It’s all about old-fashioned personal associations and intuition now. Cruise travel does exist within the pre-Internet age even now these days.

Medical Insurance for Canadian Travelers and for Visitors to Canada

September 30th, 2010 Comments off

One of the major concerns you have when traveling away from home is your health. When you are away from home, you never know if you might get sick or injured. If this happens, you will be faced with a bigger problem. The expense incurred from a medical emergency while away from your home country may not be entirely covered by your personal medical insurance plan. If this is the case, then you would incur the medical cost yourself and these medical expenses can be enormous. Worse, without medical insurance, you might not receive privileged care when you seek needed medical attention. For these reasons, it is important that you have proper travel insurance coverage that pays medical insurance expenses.

Travel insurance companies in Canada may not only provide medical insurance plans to travelers away from Canada. There are also medical insurance plans that cover emergency medical expenses for visitors in Canada. There are many Canadian travel insurance companies that offer emergency medical insurance for Canadians traveling outside Canada as well as Visitors traveling to Canada. Travel Insurance Quotes provides instant quotation and comparisons from the best Canadian travel insurance companies to ensure you have the most appropriate coverage for your travels. The result is that you can feel assured that you have adequate medical insurance whether you are a visitor to Canada or a traveling Canadian.

Emergency medical travel insurance can be purchased alone or in a comprehensive travel insurance packaged policy. These comprehensive travel insurance plans combine emergency medical, trip cancellation, trip interruption, accidental death, and baggage in one single policy. Comprehensive travel insurance policies provide many benefits;

1. Excellent Value – in most cases it is cheaper to purchase the comprehensive travel insurance package than purchasing each plan separately. You can save up to 60% of the cost of individual plans.

2. No Medical Questionnaires – Most companies do not require Seniors to answer medical questionnaires when purchasing a comprehensive travel insurance package. Normal pre-existing condition exclusions apply so please read the policy carefully before purchasing.

3. Simplicity – When purchasing a comprehensive travel insurance package your credit card will only be charged once, you will only need to deal with once insurance company if you need to file a claim, and you will only have one policy number to carry while you are travelling.

Most Canadian travel insurance companies offer comprehensive travel insurance packages to Canadian travelers. Only a few offer these comprehensive travel insurance packages to visitors to Canada. Travel Insurance Quotes will assist you in getting the best comprehensive plan for your travels.

Emergency Canada medical insurance can be purchased for a single trip only, or annual policy can be purchased. Single trip emergency medical plans are only good for the trip duration that you indicate when you purchase the policy. If you stay longer you can extend the coverage as long as you haven’t had a claim and the original policy has not expired. Annual plans cover you for an unlimited number of trips within 365 days. You need to indicate the number of days your trip lengths will be when you purchase the annual emergency medical travel insurance plan. If you need additional days than your annual plan will cover than additional ‘top-up’ days can be purchased to cover you entire trip. Annual emergency medical travel insurance plans are available for both Canadian travelers and visitors to Canada.

They are used for medical care that needs emergency medical attention. Medical check-ups is not necessarily included in the plan. Cases such as accidents or sudden illness can be good as emergency in nature. Emergency medical insurance can be purchased upon single booking of the flight elsewhere. But if you are frequently traveling outside Canada, it may be wiser to buy annual medical insurance plan. You just have to evaluate how frequently you travel in a year and compare it with how much you spend for single trip emergency medical insurance. You might find out that buying annual emergency medical insurance is cheaper. Contacting the personnel and staff of Travel Insurance Quotes should not be difficult.

Single Parent Travel: Tips for Single Parents Traveling with Kids

September 30th, 2010 Comments off

If anyone deserves a vacation, it’s a single parent.
Managing your children’s lives by yourself, in addition to supporting the family on one income is a tough job. And, when it comes to taking a vacation, the travel industry needs to come to some realizations about the reality of the single parent traveler and his or her family.
If you’ve been frustrated by package deals geared toward couples or two parent families, you’ll be happy to know that you are not alone. Many single parents feel the same way you do. Fortunately there are solutions to help you travel economically and stress-free in a way that’s fun for all.
Traveling as a single parent starts with planning the right kind of trip. Going on a vacation only to spend the majority of your time doing what the kids want to do is no way to relax. In order to keep balance in the family, make democratic decisions on where to go and what to do.
During your vacation, spend one third of your time doing something that you want to do with kids in tow, one third of the time doing something specifically for the kids and the final third doing something you’ll all enjoy. Before you head out on your trip, type up an itinerary of the places you’ll see. This way there won’t be arguments while you’re on the road about where you’re going and what you’ll do when you get there.
You can save a great deal of money by taking your own food. Stock up on granola bars, energy bars, powdered drink mixes, dried fruits and other non-perishable items so you don’t have to spend a lot of money on meals.
Although it’s nice to enjoy the food of the culture you’re visiting, you have to remember that money spent on food could be spent on sightseeing and other activities. You could aim to eat breakfast and lunch from your bags and then eat dinner out. This way you’ll save money without feeling deprived.
Balance your daily activities so that you and your children don’t end up too tired. Most of the problems with kids on vacation has to do with them getting overtired and cranky. Even though you’re on vacation, don’t push your kids too hard with the activities. Balance a morning at the museum with a relaxing afternoon picnic at a park. If you’re visiting an amusement park, try to spread your visit over two days so you can hit all of the big rides without stressing yourself or your kids out.
The travel industry is starting to change slowly and is recognizing the need for package deals that don’t include two adults. Make sure to ask your travel agent or do some research online to find this kind of packaged vacation. You should be able to save on your vacation without paying for two adult tickets.
Hopefully, these tips have you excited about your next vacation as a single parent. With a little practice and a lot of planning you can have a dream vacation that both you and your kids can enjoy.

Book Cheaper Flights with a Travel Agency

September 30th, 2010 Comments off

These days, there are so many different ways that you can save money on flights and other travel expenses in general. Traveling has gotten to be very expensive lately, and the unsuspecting consumer ends up paying for multiple different expenditures that they did not plan for in their budget.  In the past, it was more expensive to go through a travel agency due to the fees that you might have to pay to the agency. These days, that could not be further from the truth as it is actually much cheaper and stress free to book flights and other travel accommodations through a travel agency.

Finding flights on your own can be a stressful hassle due to the array of airlines, times, locations and layover possibilities that you need to be aware of.   Many times, airlines will tack on additional fees to your flight costs which will leave you spending much more on your flights than you expected, and, in turn, much more on your overall vacation. Recently, certain airlines have added an additional fee for carry-on luggage and additional bags that go underneath the plane. A travel agency will be able to inform you of these fees that you might otherwise not know about. They can also help to get you on an airline that will not charge extra for the bags that you need to bring with you on vacation, while attempting to get you the best price for your flights. Travel agencies will find you the lowest rates for flights as well as being able to help you plan each portion of your trip.

There are several reasons that travel agencies can help you by providing you with cheaper flights. Travel agencies work very closely with the airlines, enabling them to always be aware of any discounts that might apply to your overall situation. This means that if there are any discounts available at the time you are purchasing your tickets, you are going to hear about them through your travel agency. While you will be able to find many different deals on your own, you are not always going to be able to be eligible for those deals without the accompaniment of a travel agent. A travel agent can usually find more deals than you can by just searching the internet through their massive contact list.

It is much easier for travel agents to work with airlines to find cheaper flights, as well. In many cases, they have already purchased and booked flights through the various different airlines with previous customers, which give the travel agent an upper hand and insight as to what the airlines are offering.   Also, many times travel agencies are offered bulk or special rates, because the airlines are rewarding them for sending business their way. This means that there are deals that are specifically set aside for the travel agencies. These deals you will not be able to find anywhere else. These deals you will only be able to take advantage of if you are using a travel agent.

There are plenty of other reasons to go with a travel agency as well. With a travel agent you can find other deals on accommodations such as car rentals, and other aspects of your travel. This means that no matter where you are going on your vacation, and no matter what you feel like doing on your retreat, you are going to be able to find a lot of great deals to get the best value for your money.

One of the best things about booking your vacation with a travel agency is that you can be confident in knowing that they are only a phone call away while you are on your vacation, should any problems arise. If something goes wrong on a travel-agent booked trip, you are going to be able to have their help and support to allow you to find better deals, and fix problems as they take place. Having a friendly person on your side makes a great difference, and often takes a big weight off of your shoulders. If you had not booked with a travel agency and a problem come up with your hotel accommodations, you are left to fend for yourself. With a travel agency, they will gladly take care of any problems so that you do not have to waste another minute of your well-deserved trip worrying.

Therefore, if you really do want to have an excellent vacation, you can make sure that you not only have a wonderful time, but for a great price with the help of a travel agency. Although it might be tempting to try to book your plans on your own, in today’s economy, it is really much smarter to use a travel agency in order to take advantage of all of the amazing deals and discounts they have to offer. Using a travel agent can help you make good choices about your costs, while helping you save money overall.

Spontaneous Travel: Going With What You Feel

September 30th, 2010 Comments off

Do you need a vacation? Are you tired of staying inside the four walls of the office and not seeing the sun rise and set? Do you feel stressed out?
If you do, then you might want to take a leave of absence, book a flight to anywhere, and don’t plan too much about the trip. Yes, sometimes, all you really need is a change of environment. Sometimes, all you really need is a break from your monotonous and stressful corporate life. Sometimes, all you really need is a chance to appreciate nature and the other aspects of life – aspects that you don’t usually see in the office.
So how do you carry out a spontaneous travel? Here are some suggestions. 1. Don’t plan.
It is called spontaneous travel because virtually no planning is involved. You don’t even make an itinerary. As long as you know where you want to go, then that’s good enough.
But you need to read a bit about your destination. That way, you know what and what not to bring. In addition, you would know which places to check out and which locations to avoid. Let the city guide you on your adventure. Let your heart lead you. 2. Get loaded.
When you are enjoying a spontaneous travel – especially when you are travelling alone – make sure that you have enough money with you. Don’t bring too much, or too little. Keep a budget and try your best to stay within your set limits. This way, you can still exercise spontaneity in your activities, but you don’t overspend. After all, you don’t want to go home after a fulfilling trip and find out that you’ve spent all your savings. Now, where’s the fulfilling part in that?
Also, know the essentials – so you can bring them. If you are going to a tropical country or to one of your country’s pristine beaches, make sure you are ready with your swimwear and your sun block lotion. If you set your heart to joining mountain trekking, of course, don’t forget your hiking boots. 3. Be Open.
The best thing about a spontaneous travel is that you are not bound by plans and pre-conceived set of activities. As such, live the essence of this kind of travel and be open to the possibilities.
If you are single, be open to the fact that you might meet someone interesting during your trip. If you are indulging in this travel to mend a broken heart, be aware that you might still be reminded of the person who has caused you pain even if you are sitting on the sandy beaches of Miami, for example. If you are simply out to take a break from the office, be open to the possibility that someone may just offer you a more interesting job. Be open to everything.
Once again, the best thing about taking a spontaneous travel is that you are opening a lot of possibilities. So if you have lived your life doing a lot of planning, you might want to stop for a while. If you have been obsessed about your schedules, goals and timelines, take the time to pause. Life is full of surprises – you might just be amazed at what a little spontaneity can bring into your scheduled and carefully planned life.

Traveling With Teens: Top Five Tips for a Peaceful Family Vacation

September 30th, 2010 Comments off

Understanding teens can be difficult, especially when you are planning a vacation. Your teen will likely want to stay home rather than vacation with the family, and even if you are lucky enough to have a mature teen who enjoys spending time with you, he or she will still likely be moody, easily embarrassed, and uncooperative at times. Do not worry – you are not doing anything wrong as a parent! Vacationing with your teen might be difficult, but in the end, the effort is worth the lasting memories you will make together. That said, you do not want to spend the whole time fighting. Here are five tips for planning and enjoying a peaceful family vacation together:

Tip #1: Cater to your teen’s interests – One of the hardest parts of planning a vacation if you have children of all ages is finding activities that everyone can enjoy. On one hand, you have to make sure that your younger children are not bored and throwing temper tantrums. On the other hand, if you want to avoid arguments, it is important to cater to your teen’s interests. Luckily, there are often a number of activities on any vacation that allow children and adults alike to have fun. More specifically, though, do not just find teen-friendly activities. Look for places you can go that specifically will interest your teen. For example, if your son likes music, stop by a vintage record shop or a store with music memorabilia. If your daughter likes water sports, arrange for some jet skiing or sailing. Even if your teen pretends to look apathetic, when you arrange for interesting activities, he or she will have fun.

Tip #2: Respect your teen’s space and give him or her some alone time – On a vacation, it can be a challenge to coexist in such close proximity to everyone else in your family. Teens especially need space, and on vacation, they usually do not get much privacy. Consider the ways in which you can give your teen a little time alone without ruining the vacation for everyone else. One idea is to allow your teen to stay in an adjoining hotel room (with the door open) or his/her own tent if you are camping. You can also consider inviting one of your teen’s friends on the vacation with your family. That way, they can do some activities on their own, but still make use of the buddy system for safety’s sake.

Tip #3: Get your teen involved with the planning – Although some teens will not be interested in the least, many young adults will be much more willing to cooperate if they get to make some of the vacationing decisions. You might be surprised at the activities your teen really wants to do versus what you would have planned. Maybe your teen really wants to go to the zoo, or maybe your teen would rather spend some time at an amusement park. Be ready to be surprised! Of course, you may not be able to allow your teen complete vacation planning freedom, but it is a good way to get him or her on board. As a bonus, this helps teens learn about budgeting and travel preparations.

Tip #4: Give your teen choices – Beyond planning, try to give you teen choices on a daily basis while you are on vacation. Saying, “what do you want to do,” can be dangerous, as your teen may want to do activities that younger children in your family cannot enjoy (or even worse, their answer may be “nothing!”). So, instead, come up with two choices and let your teen decide between them (ex. “would you rather go shopping or spend time on the beach?”). Teens like to know that their opinion is valued – and they are more likely to enjoy themselves when they have had a hand in the decision-making.

Tip #5: Choose your battles – Lastly, choose your battles. Remember, you are on vacation. Instead of fighting about everything, try to relax a little and only argue about the things that are really important, like the skimpy bathing suit your daughter wants to wear, rather than the things that are insignificant, like the fact that he or she brought a cell phone to text friends while on vacation. If there is a major problem, sometimes it is best to suggest that you both calm down and deal with the situation when the vacation is over. There is no sense in ruining a fun day for the entire family because of a dispute between you and your teen.

In general, you may not be able to stop every disagreement from happening, but you can lessen the blows a bit by following the above five tips. No matter where you live or where you are traveling on vacation, some teens will always be challenging, but that does not mean that you should skip a potentially fun and relaxing family vacation.

Great Travel Option

September 30th, 2010 Comments off

Prepare yourself for a free travel experience. If you’re one of those who love journey, viewing different sceneries, experiencing other culture, you would agree that traveling is a wonderful experience one has to endure. Not merely will you’ve got a opportunity to visit fascinating places and states, but your mind will also feel relaxed and you have got to fess up pleases our heart to see attractive perspectives which makes us forget about our concerns in life. Aside from that, travel us a quick break from our daily routine. And confess, who does not want to have a relaxing break from our activities and unwind? Almost every one of us wants to, right? And as sure as I am writing this article, travel is the 1st option that comes to your consciousness each time you intend to have a break. However , holidays can be costly too. Except for the airline ticket, you cannot just travel to a place without a pocket cash. That would make your travel a lot dull than staying at home. That is why folk try many tricks like booking their domestic tickets one month in advance to booking their global flights at least two to three months upfront for saving on their airfare. Indeed, this is an effective method to economize, and if there are still alternative ways to save cash for travel, I’m sure it also will be a hit. Due to this, travel companies and other travel agencies, hotels have come up with travel vouchers to money on this behaviour of the travelers. If you know what a travel voucher is and you understand how a travel voucher works, you know you can save thousands of bucks on vacation travel over time. Travel Vouchers are redeemable certificates the travel companies award to their clients or employers to their workers. These vouchers serve as discounts for travelers to be in a position to reduce the cost of their expenses during their vacation. These can be employed at select hotels, restaurants, services and even in airlines. Lets’ face it ; travel vouchers are a wonderful deal. With this, it is something that frequent travelers definitely look forward to. As a matter of fact, it doesn’t only benefit the consumers, but the distributors too. For example, cheap airfare with travel vouchers is a win-win situation for the consumer and the distributor. The patron gets to the otherwise high priced air ticket at a more nominal price and the distributor who gave the purchaser this travel certificate gets part of the redemption fee. This is the reason why travel vouchers are popular in tourism due to the convenience they offer to the traveler. In addition, there are many ways in which you can get a travel voucher. But you need to understand that even though it is said to be free travel vouchers, they’re not actually free, or else it will not be a’give and take’ relationship between the traveler and the distributor. In fact, free travel vouchers aren’t completely free unless somebody redeems the voucher for you. Yes, the voucher must be redeemed. That suggests that although you are seeing a free travel voucher in front of you, you will need to pay a tiny redemption fee to obtain access to extra information which will actually let you book your travel reservation. But you needn’t fret about this redemption fee, because it is nothing compared to what you would typically pay for the same vacation if you had just acquired it outright thru a travel agency or even booking it online . And if you believe the redemption fee is too high, you may either turn down the offer or negotiate the costs with the distributor and for sure, they are going to work something out with you. Eventually, though a free travel voucher is not totally free, still you’ll be saving a lot of money on your next vacation. And on using it, you would actually harvest its wonderful benefits and an excellent holiday. So if you want to give yourself a break and travel, give your budget a break as well . Get your free travel vouchers now! Http://www. royaltygateway. com/

In A Travel Partner, Flexibility Matters

September 30th, 2010 Comments off

In looking for a perfect travel services provider, there is but more than just one criterion that must be checked. Some travelers get contented with only affordable travel deals and vacation packages; mindless of the countless problems they might encounter in their rush choice of travel partners. Numerous travel companies from all over the world make the same promises; that is, to offer convenient travel escapade to their clients. They, of course, could not be blamed for making such vow. It is a way of attracting more and more customers and gain greater chances to profit. However, some companies just fall short of travelers’ expectations. Overtime, people who travel have shifted from lenient clients to critical thinkers making critical choices. Though there are still occasions where a smart customer is deceived. Among top criteria that travelers look for in a travel company, one important point seemed to be commonly ignored. Often, this character is just realized when an eventual hitch during the trip happens. That is the only time when a traveler realized that his/her travel service provider is not even close to being “better” at rendering its service. And that despite good discount travel offer, the company would not be able to guarantee a worry-free escapade. The flexibility of a travel company in terms of rendering its services is very important. This is especially true in the travel business where many factors remain uncertain until a trip is over. To be able to adapt to changing situations and uncontrollable circumstances is important for a travel service provider. It is by this character that the company could guarantee a pleasant travel experience even when the unexpected happens. Total flexibility, however, is quite improbable in the travel business industry. One must accept the fact that there are incidents that are beyond human control and management. Many occurrences are beyond repair and reimbursement. These include weather problems, natural and man-made accidents and numerous others. But of course, it feels assuring to know that you can count on your travel partner whenever something goes out of hand. There maybe things that can’t be fixed, but there are also alternatives that could somehow compensate the burden of the problem. This is where the flexibility of your travel service provider becomes significant. A travel company that could offer effective alternatives to their clients during times of unexpected happenings is a company that stands up to its promise of a convenient travel. Yet, the flexibility of a travel company can’t be determined at first glance. But there are factors that depict this character in a travel agency. One is the reputation that the company established through the years of its service. Others include testimonies from satisfied patrons, carefully designed travel system, impressive features and the company’s ability to foresee possible quandaries. Expedia stands up to the critical inspection of travelers. The company’s long experience in the travel industry speaks up to its ability to provide convenient travel. These same experiences gave Expedia the ability to provide alternative services to its clients when unexpected problems arise. Expedia savings is also an assurance that your trip will go as smooth as possible, even amidst seemingly impossible situations. For one, the company is based online making it accessible for customers whenever and wherever they are. There are also Expedia coupons and coupon codes available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in the Internet. These coupons could be easily purchased and be used in emergency situations. Say, for example, air travel is being cancelled for several days in the area where you are. With only limited money, you can access Expedia’s 24 hour discount offers to give you discounts on hotel accommodation. Expedia assures their clients of convenience; not only in arranging travel preparations, but also during and after the trip.

Travel Insurance Coverage Limits & The Volcano In Iceland

September 30th, 2010 Comments off

Most of travelers coming from or heading to Europe last week probably didn’t think, “Does my travel insurance cover volcano eruptions?” when they headed to the airport last week. However, the answer to this question has become a matter of the utmost importance to the millions of travelers stranded by the eruption of Iceland’s Eyjafjöll volcano. With volcanic ash clouds shutting down airports across northern Europe, knowing thy insurance has become one of the only protections against a long camping trip in Heathrow airport. Already insurers are feeling the pressure from the influx of insurance claims as a result of Wednesday’s eruption and the subsequent airspace shutdowns. American travel insurer, Travel Guard, has reported that its assistance centers have been flooded with more than triple the call volume typically experienced on a Thursday to Monday time frame. “We’re being swamped with calls from both U. S. travelers trying to get to Europe and those stranded in Europe,” said Travel Guard spokesperson Charles Mardiks. Travel insurance covers the great unforeseen “what ifs” of travel. However, only about 30 percent of Americans purchase it, and most coverage is created for the mundane annoyances of travel: trips cancellations or interruptions, missed connections, bad weather and lost bags. Insurers don’t usually foresee smoldering Icelandic volcanoes in their policymaking. So though most insurers have been generous in their response to the crisis, policyholders face a lot of uncertainty, especially as the shutdown enters its fifth day. “The bottom line,” advises President John W. Cook of Connecticut-based travel insurance seller QuoteWright, “is you need to read your plan carefully, and don’t assume that there will or will not be coverage. “Here are some answers the most critical insurance questions about the Icelandic volcano eruption and its effect on travelers. Help, I’m stranded in Europe! Will my travel insurance cover me?The answer to this question depends on whether or not your insurance provider classifies the volcano as a “natural disaster” or an “adverse weather” event. Most insurance policies cover adverse weather events that cause your airline to cease operations for a specific time period, usually 24 hours. Bad weather is a common occurrence and makes economic sense to include in a travel insurance policy. Natural disasters, on the other hand, are not as common, so some insurance providers choose not to include them in their insurance packages in order to keep premiums competitive. There’s a good chance that though your insurance provider will cover adverse weather problems, they will not cover natural disasters. That means the way insurers are classifying the volcanic ash cloud is having a big effect on coverage for trip cancellation and interruption coverage. If your policy does not cover natural disasters, it’s possible that you may be denied coverage. Even when the policy does cover natural disasters, you might not be covered if your location is still habitable. Some travel insurances provide coverage only if your destination is “made uninhabitable by a natural disaster,” which might work if you were traveling to earthquake-damaged China, but not if you are stuck in London. Luckily, most insurers have decided that the wind carrying the ash should be considered as adverse weather, so unless your insurance has a heart of Grinch-like proportions, you should be covered by your insurance. However, many companies have determined that policies purchased on or after April 13, 2010—when the effects of the volcanic ash became a “foreseen event”—are not are eligible for trip cancellation, trip interruption or travel delay benefits. Some others, such as CSA Travel Protection and Access America, have a later cut-off date of April 15, 2010. I have travel insurance. What does it cover? Those lucky enough have travel insurance are going to benefit the most right now from three types of standard coverage: trip cancellation, trip interruption and trip delay coverage. Under these three types of coverage, volcano-stranded travelers can see their flight, hotel and food expenses reimbursed. And since most travel insurers are labeling the ash cloud as adverse weather, policyholders should see a full or partial payout for most of their losses. Many insurers are paying100 percent of non-refundable flight or vacation deposits under trip cancellation and trip interruption policies. As for trip delay coverage, this type of insurance is going to reimburse the day-to-day expenses incurred by the shutdown. Things like food, hotel and local transportation are covered. It’s important to know, however, that trip delay payouts are effected by the total cost of your trip, the cost of your policy, and your purchase date. So your options are limited by the amount of money you put into your policy. An average policy will usually pay out around $150 per person, per day for delays. Depending on the policy, you might also be limited by a maximum payout that ranges from about $750 to $1,500. Depending on the policy, coverage kicks in if you are delayed from three to 12 hours for a reason specified by your insurance. But the reimbursements are not the only thing that stranded travelers are receiving. Insurers like Travel Guard have their representatives find hotels, alternative flights and prescription replacements for their customers, says Travel Guard spokeswoman, Carol Mueller. What can I do if my travel insurance policy expires while I’m abroad? If for reasons covered in your policy and beyond your control, you are stranded and in that time your policy expires, you can get an extension of benefits. Travelers stranded by the airspace shutdowns meet this criteria. However, the length of this extension depends on your insurance. Several insurance companies have an ‘open-ended’ extension where the insurance policy’s coverage is extended beyond its expiration date and continued until the traveler has reached their return destination,” says Vikki Corliss, director of public relations at Insuremytrip. Some companies, however, provide coverage up to but not exceeding seven days beyond the traveler’s original return date. With the crisis extending to its fifth day, time might be running out for some people. But just because coverage ceases, doesn’t mean benefits stop. “Trip cancellation and trip interruption coverage will usually continue after the end of the extension,” says Cook of QuoteWright. What might not be covered are medical emergencies. In many cases, if a traveler experiences a medical emergency after the end of the policy extension, they will no longer be covered. However, Cook suspects that very few people fall under that category. He also believes that policy providers would stand up and continue coverage after the seven-day extension. Other insurance companies says that they plan to look at extensions on a case-by-case basis. What if the airspace shutdown continues? Will my insurance pay for an alternate way back to the States?Hopefully, we won’t see the return of transatlantic sea travel as the primary mode of transportation, but if we do, travel insurance will cover any type of return transportation. What confines a traveler’s options are the monetary limits set by the cost of his or her trip. So a person who insures an expensive trip has many more travel options than a person who insures an $2,000 trip and essentially gets $3,000 in insurance back. Travel Guard, however, says that most travelers are not at the point to consider alternate transportation yet. Most travels are looking for alternative flights out of Europe. Regardless of the uncertainties facing travelers, having insurance is proving to be a life-saver for many stranded in EuropeFor more information, visit PeterGreenberg.

Tourism And The Environment

September 30th, 2010 Comments off

Positive effects of tourism on the environment.

The most important factor in favor of tourism leaving positive impacts emanates from the very fact that the environment constitutes a very important part of tourism product.

Economic benefits to the society- flow in the form of foreign exchange earnings, direct and indirect employment opportunities have been possible due to the development of tourism and the associated infrastructure. It also leads to improved government revenues n the form of various kinds of taxes levied on tourism activities.

Improvement and preservation of parks and cultural heritage-The tourism activities also lead to better resource availability for the construction of infrastructure and maintenance of heritage properties and parks.

Promotes cross cultural exchanges with the tourist and resident- The population is able to learn more about each other’s culture. This leads to a better understanding of each other.

Negative impacts of tourism on the environment.

Negative impacts of tourism can be studied into three classifications: natural, built and cultural environment.

Effects on natural environment.

These effects can be summarized into four categories namely: effects on flora and fauna, pollution, depletion of natural resources and visual effects.

a) Effects on flora and fauna

The effects of tourism activity on ecological balance of the area can be looked at two levels:

b) Effects on pollution

Water pollution occurs due to the discharge of untreated water, inorganic and organic wastes and sewage. One of the major causes of water pollution caused by tourism industry is discharge of dumping of oil, petrol, inorganic and organic wastes by hotel units and means of water transport. In many coastal waters the source of water pollution are hotels and resorts that dump raw or inadequately treated sewage. Sewage pollution can alter the ecological balance of an area resulting in a marked decline in species diversity. Air pollution can also accompany tourism developments e. g.   from  burning of fossil fuels  for providing power and  heating, from the forms of transportation  used by tourists. Noise pollution occurs mainly due to increased traffic, water sports activities and music in restaurants and discos.

c)      Depletion of natural resources-

Increased activity and consumption may lead to rapid depletion of renewable and non-renewable natural resources like construction material, forests, water and animal life. Tourism led deforestation and degradation are widely reported issues. Tourists demand increases the demand for fuel, demand for timber for construction and the very short growing season add to the problem of forest degradation and deforestation. Vegetation has also been affected due to the souvenir industry in particular. Increased deforestation for wood based carvings and large scale massacre of animals for animal skins and wings has been reported in many developing countries. The presence of tourists also disturbs the predator- prey relationship causing ecological imbalance.

d)     Visual effects:

This can be caused due to three reasons namely; littering, sewage and poorly sited and constructed buildings. Littering is one of the major causes of visual pollution at tourist destinations. Abandoned aluminum cans, oxygen bottles and foodstuff become a permanent kind of defacement. The problem is compounded by the use of non-biodegradable packing materials which do not decompose and blocks the drains. Visual quality may also be affected due to open discharge of sewage. Poorly designed, sited and constructed buildings and other tourist facilities are a well known consequence of much tourism development. Frequently delvading from the visual amenity of natural environment by blocking views

BUILT ENVIRONMENT

The effects of tourism on built environment can be classified into three types: on architectural façade, change of land use and burden on infrastructure.

Large scale construction of infrastructure and tourists facilities leads to change of land use in the area, through direct loss as a result of urban expansion  or indirectly as  a consequence of changes in land values. This may be harmful for the local ecological balance. Market force-led indiscriminate construction of tourist infrastructure leads to overstrained civic infrastructure. Facilities like water, electricity, roads and public health often exist in accordance with the local needs. A sudden increase in number of uses results in breakdown of the system.

Impact on the socio-cultural environment.

a) Impacts on tourists.

The major impact on tourists that emerges is on the quality of recreational experience. With the increase in popularity of a destination, more and more people visit the area requiring much larger infrastructure in the form of hotels and other associated facilities.

b)      Impact on the host population.

Tourism developments in Kenya have produced both positive and negative results (change in traditional societies. ) among the negative effects of tourism are:

-          Increase in crime rates.

-          Social conflicts

-          Overcrowding

-          Decline in traditions

-          Environmental deterioration

-          Dependency on industrial countries

It is frequently stated that traditions in the host countries are weakened under the influence of tourism. There is often a loss of identity of traditional cultures resulting in tourist facilities like accommodation . This loss of identity resulting from tourism often destroys intimate, personal and friendly relationship and leads to commercialism and materialism. This result in change of system based on social and moral values to a system based on money. Among the cultural strategies the people develop to cope with the effects of tourism are; resistance, retreatism, boundary maintenance, revitalization and adoption.

Resistance: Differences in wealth and lifestyle between the tourists and local residents can generate feelings of envy and resentment among the local people. Tourism development may result in a lot of resentment against the tourists and tourist facilities.

Retreatism: This can be total boycott of the tourist and revival of the old traditions and culture.

Boundary maintenance: This may happen at a stage of development of tourism when the benefits start percolating to a large section of people and the negative effects of tourism developments are overshadowed by the positive economic gains. This process involves establishing a well defined boundary between the foreign and the local culture and presenting the local traditions to foreigners in a different context so that the effects of the foreigners on the local are minimized.

Revitalization: As culture is an integral part of the tourism product, sometimes the protection of traditional culture itself becomes necessary to promote tourism.

Adoption: Young people have accepted the western moral values about sex and dress due to their contact with tourists.

However, among the five stages revitalization may not manifest itself as a distinct strategy. It may coexist with boundary maintenance and adoption.

Conclusion:

Tourism developments have both positive and negative environmental consequences. The management part of it, therefore gains more importance owing to the need of developing countries to generate incomes, they are prone to tourism-related environmental damage. The challenge is to achieve the balance between the frequently competing demands of tourism and environmental conservation. It is therefore essential that those involved in tourism planning and development should have a greater appreciation of the environmental implications of tourism development. Formulation and enforcement of the environmentally sustainable policies for development of tourism is a precursor to the integration of tourism development and environmental conservation.

Sustainable Tourism, Best Practice From Italy

September 30th, 2010 Comments off

Waiting for the confirmation of the increment of foreign tourist flows to Italy, looking at the positive data (+4%) of 2007, it is interesting to underline that the Bel Paese hospitality, focuses its attention on the analysis of a new phenomenon called “sustainable tourism”.

Sustainable means a new tourism, far away from the conventional tourist destinations, slow mobility, special attention to the relationship between tourism and nature, in order to realize a new equilibrium between man and nature, following strategies of harmony and respect of environment. It aims to promote cultural, historical and artistic peculiarities of the territory.

People run away from the most crowded tourist destinations, and Green Tourism is able to offer something easy, back-country, natural reserves, parks, cycling routes and trekking paths. Investments in Green Tourism, are something new and positive for Italian tourism market innovation. Useful interventions can be done promoting and qualify natural landscapes, rural atmospheres, artistic and archaeological heritage and local gastronomic tradition.

This innovative tourist offer brings hospitality business to get specialized and to increase facilities dedicated to the tourist target interested in sport and wellness holidays. Its target is constantly increasing both, in age range and social rank. Of course the main purpose is to increase tourist flows, splitting arrivals in all seasons and diversifying the offer following the rhythms of the seasons.

The sustainable tourism enriches small countrysides and creates new professional jobs, tied to the planning, the realization, the promotion and then the management of ecotourism, cyclotourism and green tourism business. From the north to the south of Italy, the most important sustainable tourism plans are born, to create new tourist flows, where the conventional mass tourism has no interest and have been financed by European Found for the valorization and the recovery of national heritage.

The tourists of the green are constantly increasing and appreciate the idea to move by foot or by bicycle. In order to answer to these new trends, hospitality structures increase the services to the customers, offering bicycle for rent, expert guides for single or groups, distributing brochures about cycling maps and routes, availability of specialistic laundry for sportswear.

All hotels take care about good food, sport menus and always assure rich biological meals, in season and OGM free.

The modern society of the consumptions needs to slow down and to simplify daily life, the Italy Bike Hotels have collected the challenge and offers their answer.

Imagine what you could do if you had additional time and additional money? What would most people do if they had additional time and extra money?Odds are, with more time and funds, most folks would opt for travel, whether on holiday, leisure travel, or on a cruise. According to the WTTC (World Travel and Tourism Council), travel as an industry, tops US$7 trillion a year. This represents one of the largest industries in the world. With such a big industry, there are also a growing number of Multi Level travel companies. Being a home business professional looking to get into the travel industry, how do you choose a business opportunity that’s desirable for you?The major purpose is to choose an authentic travel business opportunity that is an ideal fit with your personality. Ideally, you want a travel home business opportunity that makes sense to you and will make you money in the short and long term. Beneath, I’ve listed some factors you may find helpful when researching a travel company. Selecting a travel network marketing business and potential upline1. Before you even dig deep into the business, have a look at their website. Does the website look credible? Is there VALID contact information on the site? How long is the domain registered for? This in itself can set the tone for the kind of professionalism you can expect when dealing with this company. 2. Find out who the owners of the travel company are. Do they have sufficient experience and a proven track record? The long-term growth of a company goes hand-in-hand with good leadership. 3. Is the company a member of any major, credible association, e. g. , Better Business Bureau, Direct Selling Association, or a Travel Marketing Association? This is to determine the organisation’s credibility and honesty. 4. Choose a company with a proven track record of sales; preferably one with increasing sales of travel products or services in the last few years. 5. Of the travel company’s revenue, how much is from travel-related product sales, and how much is from recruiting, if any. If you have the greater part of revenue coming from recruiting, that’s a red flag for you. 6. What percentage of the organisation’s revenue do they give back to distributors? You want to get into a business that rewards its sales reps generously, but also maintains a sound financial base for the long-term survival of the company (to benefit you of course). 7. What are the sign-up fees and inventory requirements? Being in the travel industry, do you have any physical product requirement?8. How do you break even?
