Travelling Overnight and Considering Your Safety

November 7th, 2010 Comments off

Traveling by car is one of the most popular modes of transportation. When traveling long distances it may be necessary to stop overnight. Although it is important to stop driving when you feel tired, it is also important to stop in a safe and comfortable location, not just at the nearest hotel you can find. Therefore, follow these tips to feel better about where you rest your head.

The most dangerous part of staying in an unfamiliar place overnight is that you never know what kind of area you are in if you just pull off of the interstate and pick the closest hotel or motel. Because you will be exhausted and most likely not paying as much attention as you should to your surroundings, you might make a mistake and pick a less than savory area. Finding a safe area may be difficult at night, especially if you do not know much about the city you are traveling through. One road can look like any other, just as one neighborhood can seem like the next. To avoid mistaking a bad area for a safe one, try and do a little research before starting your journey.

If you have your drive mapped out and know exactly what route you will take, you should choose an area and call the day before you leave to book a room at a nice hotel. Planning your stop ahead of time will provide several benefits on the safety front. First, you will be able to know a little bit about the area before you arrive. This will allow you to choose a hotel that is clean and safe in a good neighborhood and could also help you find other resources like grocery stores or restaurants. Second, you will be able to check in quickly. By eliminating the stress of hoping for a vacancy and going through payment details when all you want to do is sleep, you will eliminate a prime opportunity for someone to take advantage of you or break into your car. Many criminals make their move when their potential victims appear to be preoccupied or tired. By expediting the check in process you can be safely sleeping in your room sooner.

When you are getting your luggage out of your vehicle, it is important to put everything of value in your car out of sight. IPods, navigation systems, and cell phone chargers should be hidden so as to not attract the attention of thieves. Extra luggage should be taken into the hotel with you or, if it is just too much to move for one night, it should be well hidden in the trunk and completely out of sight of passersby.

Traveling by car is one of the most popular ways to get around and sometimes you must stay overnight at a hotel before reaching your destination. Remember, stopping overnight is much safer than trying to drive straight through, especially if you are tired; however, there are many safety concerns that you must address when staying in a hotel. If you adhere to these tips you will be able to both travel safely and enjoy your trip.

Avoid Theft When You Travel

People always ask us. . . how do you avoid theft when you travel?I always say I’ll go almost anywhere. . . and that’s true. We do avoid the hot spots of the world, however. Still, people worry when they are planning a trip to a foreign place. They ask. . . Is it safe there? . . . or. . . Aren’t there a lot of pickpockets? And “there” could be any place from New York to Paris to Rome. . . or to. . . . . Antananarivo! What you have to do when you travel is to just always try to practice ways to avoid theft. Stay alert and be smart about your actions. We had friends who were experienced travelers tell us about loosing their passport and driver’s license as well as their money in South America. She was carrying all of this in her purse. At dinner, she hung her purse over the back of her chair in a restaurant. At the end of dinner, she went to put her purse safely back around her neck. . . . but it was gone. She shouldn’t have hung her purse over the chair. . . . but even more importantly, she shouldn’t have had all of her valuables in her purse! The first thing we tell people when they ask advice about traveling is to wear a money belt. One of those zippered nylon pouches that fits under your clothes. Keep your passport, most of your money, and credit cards in there. That way you won’t end up like my friend. What else can you do to avoid theft? Try not to stand out. Don’t wear flashy clothes and jewelry. Rio de Janeiro is supposed to have lots of pickpockets. When we were there, we wore well-worn clothes and no jewelry. We did stand out from the bikini-clad beach crowd, but we weren’t targets. We read about a tourist who had been mugged and had his gold chains stolen. . . After the first theft, he went and bought more gold chains and wore them to the beach. Know what happened? Of course you do. . . he had them stolen again. Why tempt thieves?Be alert to pickpockets. They thrive in crowded places, but that’s not the only place they can strike. We were in an empty Paris metro station waiting for a train. We had just arrived, and we had our luggage with us. As the train came in, my partner said he’d get both suitcases. As soon as his hands were full, two men appeared out of no where and brushed up against him. Well, my partner had his wallet in his front pocket, and he clamped his arms against his side. . . . I yelled and asked them what they were doing. . . in English since this was the “heat of the battle”. When they figured there was too much attention being called to them, and they weren’t going to get anything, they said, “Sorry, wrong platform. ” In English. Yea. . . right! We foiled a pickpocket trying to unzip our daypack in a crowded market in Antananarivo, Madagascar. We had nothing of value in that daypack. . . . it was all in our moneybelts. Yelling at him sent him melting into the crowd, but it just goes to show, that even when you are alert, they can sneak up on you. Don’t try to hide valuables at the pool or the beach. They’re better off in your hotel room. Don’t leave cameras and valuables lying around in your hotel room though, keep them locked away out of sight. . . . locked in your bags, locked in the room safe, or locked in the hotel lobby safe. Hotel rooms are safe enough, but why provide temptation? If you have a rental car, don’t leave maps and suitcases visible in the car. Don’t leave them in the car at all at night. With a few common sense precautions and just staying alert, you should be able to avoid theft on your travels. It’s much better to enjoy one more afternoon sightseeing than is is to spend it reporting a theft.

Travel advice for speed would most likely encourage that vacationers maintain a speed of 60 kph or less if possible for fuel efficiently. Operating at a steady speed could help a traveler reach a destination avoiding crashes in the process. Control the speed specially for scenarios when the road could possibly be icy or wet wherein the pace will need to be slowed down even more. A traveler can potentially make use of coupons or discounts for hotels and restaurants and this is good travel advice given that most people would probably not understand that the largest percentage of expenses can certainly come from these sources alone. Children usually stay without charge in several places and internet restaurant coupon codes are very easily available so it is without a doubt a disgrace not to take advantage of such an offer. These could result to unforeseen savings significant enough to be have the ability to start you off on funding your next trip. Very last travel advice, which may be the most crucial of all, is to keep things exciting and enjoyable for everybody. Several techniques like packing games, books, and music usually are simple yet effective techniques to keep everybody entertained and happy. Any traveler might have a beneficial time during a trip without spending too much so think and enjoy and in the end after the trip one can easily start planning that following holiday.

GPS Application for Travelers in India

October 28th, 2010 Comments off

A Global Positioning System is an effective tool to locate the exact location of a person or an object anywhere on the planet with the help of satellites and a receiver. A GPS provides the longitudinal and latitudinal position of a thing/person, enabling a wide variety of applications including navigation and logistics.

The United States Military owns the Global Positioning system. It was opened for the use for civilians in the 1980s worldwide free of cost. Anybody who owns a GPS receiver can make use of the GPS services today. The GPS comprises three basic components.

It is a navigation system based on 24 satellites orbiting the Earth to form a network. This is the space segment of the GPS. Another segment is the control segment that functions to monitor and control these two dozen satellites in space. The third component of the GPS system is the receiver that functions to receive the signals sent from the satellite.

It is amazing to know that there is no limit to the number of receivers, which can be used together at the same time. It is common to find GPS receivers in mobile phones, laptops, palmtops, and ipods.

The use of GPS technology is progressing rapidly in India. It offers immense benefits in the areas of map guidance to the travelers on roads, hikers in dense forests, measurement of traveled distance by runner, surveying areas for printing maps, tracking of the goods in transit for export/import and many other fields. Receivers for the GPS today are small pocket friendly devices that may be inbuilt into other electronic gadgets for multiplicity of functions.

Travelers in India are now more exposed to latest technological gadgets and instruments as compared to the last decade. A GPS receiver in a simple mobile phone is a great example of this facility. Travelers in India can now have a choice of dedicated systems for navigation that can also be used in vehicles. The GPS is easy to use and offers various other options such as entertainment and a hands-free system with Bluetooth connectivity of the speaker. These systems are ideal for long road trips. There are also full-fledged navigation systems in India available from different companies such as SatNav.

Mobile phones are now coming with route guiding softwares whose functions differ from handset to handset. Mobile phone OS Android 2. 0 will offer inbuilt free route guiding software for full navigation in any part of the world. There are various GPS enabled mobile phones available in India that travelers can buy to ensure a safe trip within India.

GPS navigation systems are commonly found in most of the developed countries, they are still to spread its wings in India. It was not too long ago that physical maps were used here to locate the destinations and assess the distances. Offline route planning devices are helpful but real time route guiding softwares are preferable to the traveler. Locating restaurants, restrooms, hotels, or petrol pumps was never as easy as it is now, with the help of GPS.

Feng Shui Bagua Map 2010 – BTB and Traditional Bagua Maps

Feng Shui Bagua Map 2010

What I want to do in this article is help you understand the differences in a BTB Western and Traditional Feng Shui Bagua maps. I have a series of nine articles explaining how to set up a BTB Bagua gua in your home. In it I used a BTB Bagua map. The same nine articles can be used for Traditional Feng Shui as well but you will need to use a different map orientation for Traditional Bagua. Feng Shui Bagua Map 2010

When trying to set a gua in your home you first need to determine what area of the home you need to set up for each of the 9 Feng Shui zones. There are two different ways of doing this, the BTB and Traditional Bagua Maps. Let me help you create both to see the differences.

BTB (Western) Bagua Map:

I want you to take a piece of paper and draw a very large square. I then want you to divide the square into nine equal squares, three blocks in each of three rows. Think of it as a tic-tac-toe grid within the large box. Then label the boxes 1 through 9 starting left to right at the top, 1-3, then go to the second row left to right 4-6, then finally the last row, left to right 7-9. Just make them small numbers in the corner of each box for reference.

Then I want you to label each box using this reference:

*Box 1 = Prosperity and Abundance*Box 2 = Fame and Reputation*Box 3 = Relationships and Love*Box 4 = Family*Box 5 = Health (Central gua)*Box 6 = Children and Creativity*Box 7 = Skills and Knowledge*Box 8 = Career and Life Path*Box 9 = Travel and Helpful People

The last thing you need to know is how to position this map. To do this you take a look at the floor plan of your home. You can sketch it or just visualize it. The external wall of the home that the main entrance (door) to your home is located on is our reference for placing the map. Pretend you are standing in that doorway entrance to your home. Place the map so that boxes 7-9 are at your feet, up against the wall where the doorway is. Boxes 4-6 will go through the middle of your home. Boxes 1-3 are all the way to the back of your home.

Now not all homes are a perfect square. If it is rectangular, just stretch out that map to make 9 rectangular areas. If you are looking at it and, for example, area 1 for Prosperity and Abundance is missing, maybe it is a patio outside your home, that is fine. The map does not have to be restrained by the walls of the home. It can extend to the outside as well. Just use the patio outside your home for that Gua. Feng Shui Bagua Map 2010

Traditional Bagua Map:

The Traditional Bagua Map is pretty much the same; the only difference is how you place the map. In BTB Western Bagua we use the wall of your home with the main entrance door as a reference point to place the map. In Traditional Feng Shui we use a compass. So we are going to use the same map we made for BTB but position it differently. The areas created will likely be odd shaped and not perfect squares or rectangles, but that does not make a difference.

The actual compass directions for each Bagua gua are as follows:

*Box 1 = Prosperity and Abundance = Southeast (compass directions from 112. 5 to 157. 5)*Box 2 = Fame and Reputation = South (compass directions from 157. 5 to 202. 5)*Box 3 = Relationships and Love = Southwest (compass directions from 202. 5 to 247. 5)*Box 4 = Family = East (compass directions from 67. 5 to 112. 5)*Box 5 = Health (Central gua) = Center of Home*Box 6 = Children and Creativity = West (compass directions from 247. 5 to 292. 5)*Box 7 = Skills and Knowledge = Northeast (compass directions from 22. 5 to 67. 5)*Box 8 = Career and Life Path = North (compass directions from 337. 5 to 22. 5)*Box 9 = Travel and Helpful People = Northwest (compass directions from 292. 5 to 337. 5)

The simplest way to position the map we made for BTB Bagua is to have it so boxes 2, 5, & 8 are in a straight line north and south with 8 being north and 2 being at the north. It is a bit more complicated to establish each gua which is why many people who follow Feng Shui are now practicing the newer simplified version referred to as BTB or Western Feng Shui.

I do hope this helps to explain the differences of BTB and Traditional Bagua Maps, how to create both, and how to position your maps to identify each zone in your home. Until later, Sheng Chi! Feng Shui Bagua Map 2010

FlyHub Travel Tips

October 23rd, 2010 Comments off

So you are flying out of the country. Excited?  No doubt. Before you start packing, though, remember a few rules you will need to follow. Most airlines restrict the size, length, and girth of your luggage, even the amount of luggage you are allowed to take with you on the plane.

When packing your handbag pack only the essentials like your wallet and medicines (if needed). Do not carry any liquid or gels over 3 oz in volume.

Items like match boxes, fireworks, aerosol sprays and the like are a definite no-no. If you possess flammable or potentially dangerous items you are best advised to put these things away in your checked luggage. About the latter: if you have connecting flights, do ensure that your luggage is tagged accurately to display your final destination. This is so much better than having to collect your luggage and going through security yet again before catching your next flight.

You would also be well-advised to divide your clothing equally in two bags. It spares you the hassle of buying fresh clothing items in another country should one of the bags get lost.

Veteran air travelers find that familiarizing oneself with airport terminals can be of great help. This is where the internet can be of the greatest help. Locating the map of an airport – any airport – is easy. This is the sort of information that comes in handy when faced with a time crunch.

Don’t forget to double check your documents. Most countries require a visa for entry while countries like South Africa stipulate two unstamped pages in your passport before allowing entrance. A list of entrance regulations is available on the website www. travel. state. gov/travel.

Should you happen to suffer from some form of disability and require a premium seat,  inform your agent beforehand. You can also learn about seat configuration on your own by visiting www. seatexpert. com and booking your seat in advance.

Traveling to another country can be exciting and fun. Let FlyHub help you get the best deal on tickets.   Visit us at flyhub. com.

Travel Nursing Series: Nursing in Italy

October 21st, 2010 Comments off

Why do people travel?  Finding a definitive answer to that question is difficult, at best.   Human nature has many needs and these needs vary from person to person.   Perhaps plain wanderlust urges people see new places and have new experiences or the need to get away from everyday stress or pressures at home or work.   Some may want to make a religious pilgrimage to a sacred site or find new adventures in the jungle or mountains.   New careers may beckon as a cooking school lures you to enroll or the travel writing bug bites you.   Whatever the reason, travel allows you to make a connection in another country, meet different people and experience different cultures.   But most important, travel allows you to become a citizen of the world…. . to make a connection with other members of the human race.

One of the easiest careers to “take on the road” is that of the health care professional.   Physicians and nurses are in demand in every country in the world and it is easy to find work overseas.   Nursing skills are universal and those of nurses in the United States are among the most advanced.   Getting certified to work overseas in a foreign country, although a bit tedious, is relatively easy.   Usually a placement agency can help guide the US nurse through the process.

One of the most sought after countries in the travel nursing industry is glorious Italy.   The easiest way to find employment in Italy is to sign on with a recruiting agency.   They will have listings and all essential information related to the job.   Most agencies will aid in finding safe, clean and well-located housing.   One thing to remember is that, unlike the US, as buildings age in Italy they are not torn down.   Rather they are altered to suit current needs.   Therefore, accommodations in Italy are not new.   Rather they are full of character with  old baths and tiny kitchens, but with wonderful crown moldings and ancient windows. Be prepared to have a walk-up apartment, even if your building has a tiny elevator, as some European elevators have been known to be erratic in their service.

If you sign up to be a travel nurse you may be able to leave the majority of your uniform scrubs at home as many hospitals will provide nursing uniforms.   Check with your agency to see if this is one of the benefits of your job. However, if you have a favorite brand of nursing scrubs such as Cherokee scrubs or Dickies scrubs you may want to take them with you as availability in Italy is not guaranteed.   Bring several pairs of good nursing shoes to walk the hard floors of Italian hospitals.   On a recent vacation I had the unfortunate opportunity to have my husband admitted to the local hospital in Venice.   Converted from a convent from prior centuries this hospital had miles of hard marble flooring that looks wonderful but causes very tired feet. you will appreciate your Nurse Mate shoes or Dansko clogs after a long day at work.

You will find that travel nursing generally pays better than domestic nursing, plus all of your travel expenses are paid for and sometimes housing is subsidized.   Bonuses or extra monetary incentives are often part of the international travel nurse package, providing an extra sum to use to explore your new home.

And explore you should.   Driving in Italy is easy, except for major cities, and roads are well marked.   Hire a car, buy a GOOD map with all the back roads marked and travel the scenic roadways of Tuscany, taking time to shop the local markets and shops.   Do not overlook going into a shop specializing in olive oil and do a little “oil tasting”.   If you have never tasted truly fresh olive oil this is an experience not to be missed.   I am as much a fan of an olive oil tasting as I am a wine tasting.   It is a truly sensory adventure.   Wind your way through the still inhabited, vibrant cobbled towns of Cinque-Terre and admire the architectural feats of previous centuries. Visit Cortona, the hilltop town featured in “Under the Tuscan Sun” and explore a truly amazing town with incredible vistas.    And don’t forget to sample the local foods.   One should never forget to eat ones way through Italy.

Italy has such a diversity of scenery, foods and wines that it would take more than just a few trips to appreciate Italy.   From the Amalfi coast to the lakes region, from Roma to Venezia, you will find delights around every corner.  So pack up your uniform scrubs and nursing shoes and take your nursing talents to Italy.   It will be time well spent.

3 Tips on How to Travel Safe!

October 21st, 2010 Comments off

Apart from thinking about how to save money while travelling, the most common question that arises is, ‘How to Travel Safe’. The following tips will allow you to understand how you can ensure an increase in the safety while travelling-

1) Guard your valuables during the travel:

The most valuable goods during a travel are the credential papers, passport and money. You need to be careful enough to protect your passport, visas, credit cards and other documents from being lost or taken from you. Keep them safe and remain alert. You can make two copies of passport, traveler’s checks and other documents along with contact information. Keep one with yourself while travelling while store one of the set at some safe place with a trustworthy friend or family member.

2) Use proper guidebooks

While visiting a new place, where you will be a complete stranger and most probably ignorant of the local routes and customs, you will need a proper guide to help you. Nothing can be better than a guide book as it will let you have every little bit of information about a place, its routes, maps, and culture.

Nobody wants look like a lost person at the destination they chose to spend their vacations. To avoid such situation, you will need to read the guidebook to learn basic information about the vacation destination of your choice. You can learn a lot from internet and that will help, but with a guidebook, you can be assured that even if you won’t have internet connection while travelling, you will have a proper guide.

3) The Best Assurance is Proper Travel Insurance

Never underestimate the importance of travel insurance while travelling for long distances and periods. The reason being, even if you have medical insurance, your regular medical insurance may not cover the health or accident risks during a travel abroad or to some other part of the country. With proper travel insurance, you can make sure to attain reimbursements for cancelled flights, medical issues and many more.

Traveling with a Japan Rail Pass

October 21st, 2010 Comments off

Your Top 7 Questions – Answered by ACP Rail

Which trains can I travel on with a Japan Rail Pass?

The Japan Rail Pass can transport travelers across the six companies that make up the Japan Railways Group (JR Group), including JR Kyushu, JR Shikoku, JR West, JR Central, JR East and JR Hokkaido. Japan Rail Pass holders have unlimited access to travel throughout Japan’s extensive rail network, including Shinkansen ‘bullet’ trains, limited express trains, express trains and local and rapid trains. The only exceptions are the pass is not valid for “NOZOMI” trains on the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen lines or the Tokyo Monorail.

What’s the quality of rail services I can expect in Japan?

Japan’s rail network is considered to be one of the most efficient in the world, spanning its four major islands, with a total length of about 20,000 kilometers of railway. Beyond the convenience of being able to travel far and wide, train travel in Japan also has a reputation for frequent service, punctuality, safety and high speed. Imagine Shinkansen ‘bullet’ trains, travel up to speeds of 300km/hr! Not to mention high standards for modern facilities, comfort and cleanliness, Japan Rail Pass holders can look forward to spacious seating accommodations.

What Japan Rail Pass validities are available?

Am I eligible to purchase a Japan Rail Pass?

You are eligible to purchase a Japan Rail Pass if you are a tourist visiting Japan from abroad, under the entry status of “temporary visitor”, or a Japanese national who can show they have residency abroad. It’s important to note that a Japan Rail Pass cannot be purchased in Japan so be sure to arrange your Exchange Order prior to your trip.

What is an Exchange Order?

Once a Japan Rail Pass is paid for, the customer will receive an Exchange Order, which they will ultimately exchange in Japan for the actual Japan Rail Pass. The Exchange Order must be exchanged for a Japan Rail Pass within 3 months from the date the Exchange Order was issued. At the time of exchange, the customer must specify the date that they want to start using the pass. It can be any date within one month from the date the actual Japan Rail Pass is received. Once the Pass has a starting date written on it, the date cannot be changed.

Do I need a seat reservation when traveling with a Japan Rail Pass?

Shinkansen ‘bullet’ trains and most limited express and ordinary express trains have reserved Green Class seats and both reserved and non-reserved Ordinary Class seats. To find a non reserved seat, simply show your Japan Rail Pass when boarding. However if you prefer to make a seat reservation, possible without additional payment, visit any Travel Service Centre or Reservation Office called “Midori-no-madoguchi” at a JR station in Japan. At one of these locations simply show your Japan Rail Pass and receive a reserved-seat ticket before boarding, thereby guaranteeing you a seat on the train of your choice. It is especially recommended to obtain a seat reservation over holidays and during rush hour, as seat reservations can be difficult to secure. Here are some examples:

Is there any additional advice you would give a Japan Rail Pass holder?

Yes, when traveling with a Japan Rail Pass, do not use an automatic ticket-reading gate, but instead show your pass at a manned ticket gate. Also ACP Rail International is a great resource for additional details, as they outline which stations have Japan Rail Pass exchange offices and they provide a detailed Japan rail map.

Pin Art / Map Pins

October 19th, 2010 Comments off

Pin Art is the name of an executive toy pin screen, which is a boxed surface made of a crowded collection of pins that are free to slide back and forth independently in a screen to generate a three-dimensional relief. Pin screens were earlier used as animation in films and were made of metal pins. Nowadays, pin art toys are usually made of plastic pins.

Map pins, also known as map tacks and map flags, are used to identify places on a map.  Map pins usually helps in marking down your travels, observing business locations, plot customer locations and many others. Round-head map pins and numbered map pins are available in different colors and sizes. They are very easy to be found on stationery shops but usually you can get these map pins only in 100 or 200 series.

Map pins can be easily used with any type of wall map. You can even get bulletin board maps which are manufactured specifically for push pins. These maps also come with Martin Mount option that means that they can be easily hanged because of the foam core backing to accept map pins.

When considering the colors of the pins, always think about the background color of the map. The pin color should contrast nicely with the map. Also, be sure to plan in advance the number of map pins that might be required in one area of the map.

You may also use the pins to track the number of clients or customers you have in certain cities. The main problem comes when all the pins are in the cities and nothing are in the countryside. This is where map scale comes into the picture. Look for a map which has a big scale or has insets for the large cities where your map pins may tend to come together. In this way you can easily put the pins in the inset and observe an enhanced distribution pattern.

Map pins with the smaller head size can also be the solution for this problem.   That is why many people prefer buying the 200 series pins even though they are more costly. In fact, map pins aren’t just for maps. Many art galleries buy numbered pins to recognize artists work. Planners also use map pins on schematics for categorizing the key tasks in a project.

Local Resort Maps expands territory adds Vail

October 19th, 2010 Comments off

VAIL, COLORADO AND WAITSFIELD, VERMONT…

With the expansion, the next edition of the map, which comes out in December 2010, will be called The Best of Vail and Beaver Creek Resort Maps.

“The Eagle River Valley map was extremely popular. Since the map came out in May 2008, we distributed more than 250,000 copies,” said Jessica Grentner, owner of the Vail and Beaver Creek Resort Map. “The popularity made it very obvious that there was a real demand in the area for this caliber of map. Hence the expansion to include Vail. ”

Resort Maps are colorful, hand-drawn maps of towns and cities, distributed free to area visitors at travel information and rest areas as well as at advertiser locations. Each map highlights local attractions and things to do, restaurants, accommodations, retail shops, real estate and other services. Each advertiser on the map is represented with a display ad on the perimeter of the map, including a color-coded grid locator and their actual building hand-drawn, highlighted and labeled, making them easy to locate.

In addition to the hard copy map, the Vail, Beaver Creek and Avon Resort Maps will be available in interactive form on Resort Maps’ revamped Web site resortmaps. com. The site also includes reviews of area attractions and businesses, including advertisers, courtesy of TripAdvisor. com. TripAdvisor is the world’s largest travel site.

“We’re extremely excited about the new map with the expanded coverage,” said Grentner, who started the Eagle River Valley Resort Maps back in 2007 and purchased the Summit County Resort Maps in 2008. “Earlier this summer the announcement of Vail being included in the territory resulted in more than 50 new map pick-up locations and that number is growing. ”

The initial distribution of the Vail and Beaver Creek map is set for December 2010, with 150,000 copies being printed. Advertising opportunities are still available. For more information, please contact Jessica Grentner at 970-688-4800or jessicag@resortmaps. com.

Reading Road Maps

October 18th, 2010 Comments off

I’m the navigator when we rent a vehicle and ramble on our travels, so reading road maps is something I’ve gotten fairly good at. Why make an effort with a road map when you can use the latest GPS equipment? Well, for one thing, road maps give you the big picture. Lay a map out on a table, and you can see the whole country or region. It makes planning your trip simpler. And what about when you’re on the road? Can’t you just program the GPS and forget about it?GPSs are OK, but they do have their down side. They may take you right through a busy city instead of going around it. The GPS chooses the “shortest route”. It may not be the fastest. . . May I contend that a navigator reading road maps sometimes comes in handy?!? We had this happen trying to find the Des Moines Airport in Iowa recently. . . Reading the roadmap and ignoring the GPS, we avoided driving through the city. We had foreign friends who recently relied on their GPS to find their motel just outside of Yosemite National Park. The GPS insisted that their motel was 11 miles into the forest. . . . . twice! TWICE they drove through town. . . right past their motel and into the forest. The third time, they started reading road maps and looking for themselves instead of relying on the machine, and guess what. . . They had driven right past their motel those first two times, just staring at the GPS. . . had they looked on the side of the road, there it was!Sometimes you can get by with a map that isn’t really a road map! We were traveling in Mali, West Africa one time with a car and driver. He was a very good driver. . . that’s what we had asked for. . . which is whole different story. . . . So yes, he was a very good driver, but he had not traveled the country. When we left Mopti, he turned the wrong way. I was following along on our National Geographic map of the country, and it looked to me like he had turned the wrong way for Bandiagara. At first he said he was on the right road, but when he stopped to ask. Sure enough, we were on the right road. . . . going the WRONG way. Good thing I know something about reading road maps!In the U. S. you will find that major roads are numbered with odd numbers going north and south. . . and even numbers going east and west. As freeways bend around cities this might look confusing. Look out to destinations beyond the city you are close to. . . that way you can tell whether you need to get on the northbound or southbound direction. Traveling in Europe and other countries, maps will sometimes tell you the direction you’re traveling by naming major cities the highway is going to. Again, look out beyond that small section of the map toward the edges, so you’ll know which turn to take. Major roads are in bolder lines, small roads are in thin black lines. Those small “black line” roads are scenic and fun to travel, but reading the road maps and finding your direction is more of a challenge to the navigator. We contend that if you get used to reading road maps, you can get anywhere!
