7 Deadly Business Blogging Mistakes

February 22nd, 2011 Comments off

7 Deadly Business Blogging Mistakes

Below are the top 7 mistakes we see companies make with their business blog:

1. Brand Inconsistency: From the design and layout of a blog to the content, from the images you post to blog loading time, your brand is directly expressed in every element of your blog. If even one of these features is misaligned with your brand, you’ll run the risk of creating an inaccurate image of your brand. And remember, your blog readers are not only members of your target audience, but they are also your peers and key influencers. Providing them with an imprecise perception of your brand could be detrimental to your business.

2. Business-Centric Web Copy: Using your blog solely as a sales tool is unacceptable in the blogosphere. The blogging community is built on valuable information and relationships that could lead to business partnerships, new clients, and an increase in your key influencers. Therefore, blog content should never try to make a sale; rather, it should provide your readers with valuable information that is fresh, current, and informative. Focus on writing content that gives something of worth to the reader.

3. Lack of Clear Contact Information: One of the most frustrating things as an individual who is trying to contact a blogger is a lack of contact information. Don’t be one of those blogs that has no contact information.

Adding contact information is easy and painless—I promise. There are three steps involved:

Create a page on your blog titled “Contact.”
Drop your contact information onto this page.
Click publish.

And voilà! You have a contact page that makes it easy for peers, key influencers, and your target audience to contact you.

4. Zero Marketing Efforts: Blogging for business requires much more than posting two to three times a week on important industry information. Blog promotion on social media platforms and ensuring all posts offer valuable information and are properly optimized are merely a small portion of gaining exposure for your blog and your business.

In order to use your blog to its fullest potential, you must build blogger relations. To increase blog readership, consider commenting on influential blogs, mentioning other bloggers on your blog, posting articles from influential blogs on your social media profiles, asking bloggers to guest blog, and becoming friends with your favorite bloggers on social media.

5. Improper Use of Tags: In a nutshell, tags are what help the search engines and tag directories catalogue your website. Tags help you get found online. Tags should reflect what your readers would be typing into search engines. Keywords you use throughout your post should simultaneously be used as tags.

Categories, on the other hand, are meant for readers to easily find the information they’re looking for. For example, if you wrote a travel blog that focused on countries in Europe, you might have a category for each country you focus on. And let’s say you wrote a post on the variety of French baguettes. You would categorize this post under France but tag it as French food, travel France, etc. These tags describe the specific content of the post and help readers to find your posts based on specific keywords and terms.

6. Bad Headlines: Blog headlines need to grab the reader and compel him or her to take action by reading your blog. It’s your first hurdle, and it’s a big one.

The headline needs to speak to a pain the reader has or something the reader wants—now. Arousing curiosity is a good tactic. Appealing to strong emotions grabs the attention of the reader and hits him or her on a basic gut level.

When you’re writing headlines, focus on the benefits, don’t try to be too clever, don’t give false promises, and keep it short and sweet. And, keep an eye on which headlines attract the most readers, and try writing future headlines in the same manner.

7. Thick Copy: Forcing your readers to sift through loads of dense copy is not a great way to win them over. In fact, it’s one of the most agonizing things you can do to them. Give your readers what they want—good information—quickly.

Your blog post needs to be as easy to read as possible. Many people will scan your copy rather than taking the time to read every word. If they can’t scan it quickly and get to the meat, they’ll leave—and probably won’t return.

Therefore, if you want to create a loyal readership, make sure you write in short paragraphs, keep sentences short, use bulleted lists, eliminate extra words, and help readers to get to the point with effective headings.

Basics Of Blogs And Blogging

Basics Of Blogs And Blogging

Have you heard other people talking on and on about their “blogs” while all you could do was smile and nod?

Yes, “blog” is a peculiar word, conjuring visions of mosquito-infested swamps, and you can’t imagine why people would be eager to get more visitors to theirs.

But eager they are. In spite of the rather unfortunate name, blogs are the hottest things in communication since cell phones. Blogs are websites on which almost anybody can post information on almost any topic as often as they like. Blogs can be devoted to a single factual topic, or they can be the equivalent of personal diaries in which people record their private thoughts and observations about the world. The contents of a blog are limited only by the imagination of the blog’s creator, or “author”.

If you find the thought of your own blog appealing, and have an Internet-connected computer, here are some suggestions to help you both get a blog going and build an audience with whom you can share it:

First, choose a topic for your blog on which you will enjoy communicating, and prepare your material. You opinions on a subject are fine, as long as they are based on some underlying. There are always going to be those who know as much, about a topic as you, and if you want a credible blog, you need to be able to back up your statements.

Add some humor and personal experiences to your topic if you can. Writing a travel blog about places you have actually been, and about colorful locals whom you actually encountered, will make much better reading than just posting facts and figures picked up from travel sites and TV shows. Offer material which will appeal to both novice travelers–like how to avoid pickpockets–and more seasoned ones–like the best undiscovered attractions in a specific destination.

Don’t limit your blog to your own experiences. Keep it updated with news that might affect those interested in your subject. While your experiences can give people valuable insight, recognize that your opinions about what happened to you or about a specific product are, after all, just opinions. Give people factual information which they can weigh for themselves.

Keep you blog current. On the Internet, news can become old in a matter of hours, and what happened a month ago is ancient history. Telling people considering a trip to Thailand that Thailand experienced a coup last September will do nothing to help them decide about a trip next month. Updating them on the peaceful state of affairs in Thailand today, however, will.

Updating your blog will require a commitment from you. You’ll need to establish a regular time to search for and write about fresh news, and get it posted. There’ll be times when not much has happened, and there’ll be times when you can’t type fast enough. But two or three times a week are not too many to post something new. Even it it’s only to tell your readers that not much has been going on, share a few thoughts, and tell your readers when to next check in for your next entry, make an appearance. Your audience will keep coming back as long as they know you are.

Keep you blog as simple as you can, without sounding like you don’t have a complete grasp of your subject. You want to appeal to as many people as possible, and nothing will drive those newly interested in a subject away faster than lots of technical jargon and statistics. You can provide complex information, as long as you make the effort to put it in user-friendly terms.

Find a memorable name for your blog, and use your blog editing feature to post it in large, bold-face type. “My Hiking Blog” will probably sound interesting only to Mom and Dad and only because you never write or call them while you’re out adventuring. “Climbing through the Clouds” will appeal to those who either tackle the high places of the Earth, or want to.

Every so often, say, at the end of each month, archive your existing blog posts. Your blog editor will let you do this in a less than a minute. The entries will still be available for new blog readers who want to catch up, or those who want to reference your earlier writings. And list keywords for your archived work so that new traffic will be able to find its way to you.

Finally, make sure your blog is professionally presented. You have a spell checker, so use it. Proof-read your copy and correct any grammar or punctuation errors before you post your work. If you’re not sure whether you are using a word properly, get help from an online dictionary. Respect your readers as intelligent, well-informed people who could just as easily spend their time elsewhere.

These suggestions may make your entry into the world of blogging more successful, but it’s up to you to commit to building and keeping an audience.

Some Important Truths I Discovered While Blogging

November 1st, 2010 Comments off

There are two ways to learn new things. First, we read, listen, and take some notes just like we did at school.   Somewhere along the way, we encountered stuff we believed we will not probably remember later in life, but we kept on learning because we were required to. We term this passive learning.

Then there’s active learning, the type a lot of people prefer because it gets you involved. You choose to learn about the things you’re interested in or at times, you’re forced to learn because you need the input badly. Most people love active learning because one can select the things he wants to learn about, and not because he merely needs to pass the subject. Learning then becomes both educational and pleasant, which is how we all dreamt learning at school was.

What separates passive from active learning is that passive learning has the tendency to get boring over time while the contrary would be the case for active learning.   With active learning, you unearth new and interesting things as you learn your way through the area under discussion. There even comes a time when you desire to learn more than what is available at a specific time.   Just like blogging.

Some years back, the term “blogging” was quite strange to to the average Joe. But because needs of the time opened a new path of information, most of us just had to discover what blogging was all about.    Well as I found my way through blogging, I’ve come to understand that there were so many points about it that I could not have discovered without actually doing them. Below are a few points about blogging that you may find useful:

You need to make unique posts. There are millions of bloggers in the entire cyberspace and a lot of them are purely blogging to get the market’s awareness.   Great blog content will lure attention, but many good blog writers primarily did not have that in mind – they simply wrote to give readers some informational value that can be valuable. All the attention to their blog simply followed because people enjoyed what they were getting. And they gave value in their personal way, from their own experiences, and not from somebody else’s.   Make your posts distinctively UNIQUE -people like reading unique content. Put some humor into it, too – your readers are people, and they love to be entertained.

To be a success at blogging, you have to enjoy writing. I’m quite thankful that I enjoy doing all the writing now. But let me tell you something very important.   I wasn’t born a writer but discovered that writing can be enjoyable when I began to put in some comments into other blogs or forum posts. Writing became a lot easier especially when the authors exchanged  more ideas and other people put in some more thoughts. The truth is, writing is really a lot like like something we all love to do – TALK. Only put down in text form. When you approach writing that way, the words will easily flow. Another good option is to do video blogging, which is actually the hot thing to do nowadays.

Pick up traffic from various sources.   Don’t count entirely on your blog to bring in the traffic for you. Take advantage of the brilliant world of social networking and link up to Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, Digg, etc. Make your blog interactive, so your visitors and members get involved.

Blogging will bring you in contact with a lot of fantastic people. I’ve discovered so much about blogging and other internet stuff from so many fantastic people I’ve met online.   I’ve formed partnerships and affiliations witha few of of them, and everything simply began with blogging. Don’t restrain yourself to blog commenting – there are so many ways to do it online and offline.   Write to them or meet up with them if they’re coming to town arises. If you travel a lot, sit down with them for a cup of coffee when you’re in town. Who knows, you might find a great business partner later on!

In a matter of time, it will pick up. And when it does, there’s no way other way to go but UP! Like every lucrative endeavor, you need to do a lot of work at the onset. Just stick to delivering value to your audience, and the opportunities will just trickle in. In due course, the small things will grow to bigger things. . For some it takes just some months, for others it can take years. You just have to persist and be tough, and you will get there. The most important thing about blogging is to keep the faith.

Internet Money Making Ideas: Blogging To The Top

October 23rd, 2010 Comments off

There are hundreds of thousands of blogs out there on the internet today, and there are many bloggers who are making a fortune by running these. Many of these bloggers are average Joes. Yet, what made them so successful? How can you make an income just by running a simple blog? This led me to a website that claims it can show you how to do it. The website can be found at: http://bit. ly/income-blog. I will be reviewing the key points that this website makes regarding how to create an income by blogging.

The program pretty much consists of an automated robot that builds tiny niche blogs, which it then generates a massive amount of website traffic to.   Only 11 minutes of work is required to set up each one of these blogs.   Even if you are like me, with limited technical experience, you are able to set this program up with ease according to the creator of the product. The software consists of technology that has not been introduced before. It claims to generate free search engine traffic automatically. It does this by SEO and keyword optimizing your blogs so that search engines such as Google, Bing & Yahoo consistently send you traffic.

Of course the interesting point is when it mentions the residual income opportunity.   If you are familiar with Google Adsense, then you are aware that getting people to click on your ads is not easy.   The problem is not having enough traffic, and with this software that problem could become obsolete. The part I find intriguing is that the software automatically creates content and updates your blog on a daily basis, reducing the hours of work you would have to put in in order to maintain a blog. Clearly, the fact that it can save you valuable time is priceless.

In conclusion, as a personal blog writer myself, I can say that this particular product sounds quite interesting.   With thousands of blogs being created every single day, the only way to move ahead of the competition is to possess cutting edge technology and ideas.   This system succeeds in introducing both the novice blogger as well as the more seasoned one to fresh ideas to produce incredible results.   In presenting you with this review my goal is give you new resources to explore. http://bit. ly/income-blog gives you a new exciting route to travel in your blogging career.

Blogging: A Few Valuable Lessons I’ve Learned From Doing It

October 20th, 2010 Comments off

We all learn new things in two ways. First, we read, listen, and take down notes just like we did at school.   Somewhere along the way, we encounter stuff we think we won’t probably need later in life, but we continue learning because we are required to. This is passive learning.

Then there’s active learning, the type I like better since it gets you involved. You choose to learn about the things you’re interested in or sometimes, you’re forced to learn because you need the input badly. What I like about active learning is that you get information on things that your really need to learn about. And along the way, things become REALLY interesting! You get to a point where it becomes both fun and educational, something I wished school stuff really had.

The great difference between passive and active learning is that the latter allows you to experience things as you learn – that’s why it gets really interesting.   You are made to find out what you need to learn, and that’s where I believe true knowledge starts.   Just like blogging.

A few years ago, I had asked myself, “What the heck is blogging all about?” Well as I learned my way through it, I’ve come to realize that there were so many things about blogging that I couldn’t have learned without actually doing them. Here are a few that I ought to share with you:

You need to create unique posts. There are millions of bloggers in the entire cyberspace and a lot of them are simply blogging to get the market’s attention.   The most successful bloggers I’ve seen didn’t have attention as their main purpose for getting into blogging. Attention just came, because they were providing value that other people needed. And they gave value in their OWN way, from their OWN experiences, and not from somebody else’s.   Make your posts unusually UNIQUE –people love reading unique content. Put some fun into it, too – your readers are people, and they love to be entertained.

To succeed at blogging, you have to enjoy writing. It’s a good thing I do – NOW. I’m not a born writer but discovered that writing can be fun when I started to put in some comments into other blog or forum posts. And when the authors responded, I discovered how easy writing could get. Writing is simply the expression of your thoughts and opinions, so it’s just as easy as talking! When you think of writing that way, the words will simply flow. If you’re not much into writing another good alternative is to do video blogging, which is actually the hottest thing to do these days.

Get traffic from various sources.   Don’t rely entirely on your blog to bring in the traffic for you. While keywords and tags work, it pays to link up to other sources such as other bloggers, through forum participation, Facebook, Twitter, Digg, and other social sites or article directories. Make your blog interactive, so your readers get involved.

You will meet so many fantastic people as you blog. I’ve learned about blogging and other marketing stuff from so many amazing people I’ve met online.   I’ve developed partnerships and affiliations with some of them, and everything started out with blogging. Don’t limit yourself to blog commenting – there are so many ways to do it online and offline.   Write to them or meet up with them if they’re coming to town. Or pay them a personal visit if you travel. Who knows, you might find a great business partner later on!

In a matter of time, it will pick up. And when it does, there’s no way to go but UP! You need to do a lot of work in the beginning – just like everything else in life. But once you start providing value, you will begin to get wider exposures and referrals that will lead to bigger collaborations and partnerships in a matter of time. For some it takes just some months, for others it can take years. But they get there – you just have to be positive and resilient; don’t get easily discouraged and keep the faith!

Blogging for Water

October 20th, 2010 Comments off

Blog Action Day is today: Friday, October 15, 2010.   The topic: Water.

Blog Action Day was started in 2007 so that bloggers around the world could transform what people on the planet are focusing on and talking about.  The desire is, for at least for one day, that we will all be conversing about an important issue facing our planet.   This year change. org chose the critical and life-sustaining issue of water.

I traveled for 6 months in sub-Sahara Africa – that is the part of Africa just south of the vast Sahara desert. An area that is being slowly consumed by that desert.  Timbuktu is located  on the edge of it – perhaps that will give you a picture of it.   Water is a curse and a blessing to the people in those countries – some of the poorest in the world.

It is a dry, dry place often with air that often feels gritty with dust in your mouth.     A place to parch your throat.    A place of wells and women and children walking with jugs of water on their heads.    Sometimes the well is close by, some times it is very far away.

I carry an image of a woman I walked behind.   We were both on a hilly and rocky “path” in the Dogan area of Mali.    She was going to the market a few miles away carrying a big load of goods on her head.    The image I cannot forget is her feet.    The heels of her feet were so dry that they had deep cracks in them.   So deep that I could see her red and raw flesh as I trudged behind her.    Every step must have been agony.   I think of her, her long walk to market, her pain, and that there was no water along her route.    I saw no change for her, no chance to have her feet recover, no chance to fully hydrate her body.

Water is not always available.   Even when it is plentiful, it is not an untainted blessing.     The water carries illness, guinea worms (which if you inadvertently drink these tiny critters they work themselves through your skin (shutter!).  It is the children, especially those under 5, that are most vulnerable because their bodies aren’t strong enough to fight diarrhea, dysentery and other water-born illnesses.

It is a complicated situation to figure out how best to remedy the water situation there. Many of the water health issues are preventable by creating safer water supply, boiling the water, and for guinea worms simply straining it through cloth.  However, even a simple thing like boiling water is hard to do.   Fuel for the fire, which they need for cooking, is in short supply as well.    Furthermore, so many people have told the people there how to “fix” the situation, often disappointing results, that I imagine it is hard to fully believe what anyone says.

Please don’t read this and think that West Africa is a grim place.   It isn’t.    I have traveled all over the world and West Africa will always hold a warm spot in my heart.     My memories of Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso and surrounding countries are filled with fun times and wonderful people.    I felt at home there.   People were so kind and generous to me – with both their time and their possessions.    I will never forget my incredible time there and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

However, it is easy for me forget the severe water issues they face daily.    I don’t know what Blog Action Day foresees coming out of this conversation, but I am glad to be reminded.

I found out about tomorrow’s Blog Action Day today, when exploring various sources looking for inspiration for interesting and relevant topics to blog about.   Being a new blogger, I appreciate entering a world where one’s perspective is challenged and continually refreshed.

To help me in my quest to keep my content and my perspective fresh I have developed my Top 10 list of content inspiration.    Check it out if you are looking for sources to inspire your blogging or article writing.

7 Deadly Business Blogging Mistakes

October 18th, 2010 Comments off

Myths About Blogging

October 2nd, 2010 Comments off

There are certain myths that have grown up around blogs, bloggers and the blogosphere in general. Here are just some of them and some clarifications:

Anyone can start a blog! Not just anyone! There are some requirements, some more obvious than others. Obviously, you need a computer that you know how to use, an Internet connection and some experience using the Internet. You also need a host for your blog; there are blog hosts that are free and some that cost a small amount per month. One last requirement is not just an ability to communicate your thoughts but also a willingness to do so.

 Article Marketing Experts

Anyone can set up a blog! Some blogs are much easier to set up and use than others, this depends on your blog host (e. g. , blogger, iblogs, typepad, tblog, etc. ). Some blog hosts take you through a couple simple set-up steps and you’re off writing your first post but there are others that get far more technical than the average user may be ready for.

Blogging doesn’t take up that much time! That depends! Some posts, when you have a clear idea of what you want to say, may take just a few minutes while you may struggle for days (literally) with others that involve complex issues or thoughts. In general, blogging is a daily activity for the serious blogger (some bloggers write up to ten posts a day) and a once-a-week activity for the casual blogger.

Most blogs are political! Many blogs focus on political topics but most blogs are just bloggers discussing their lives, loves and travels. A list of the 50 most visited blogs at BlogHub (shows very few political blogs.

Blogs are in competition with the main-stream media! This is true in a few cases (not as many cases as bloggers would have you think). Just recently, there have been some very popular and influential social and politically-oriented blogs that have caused main-stream media outlets to back-track and change their coverage of important events.

Bloggers just criticize and have no new information to add! This may be true in some cases but blogging today is much more than the personal activity it used to be. Corporations, media outlets, public personalities, politicians and experts in almost every field have now joined the ranks of blog producers. Considering all this expertise, one would have to say that bloggers have a lot of new information to add to any debate.

You can’t believe anything you read in a blog! That’s a bit of an overstatement. You’ll run across bad information and even intentional untruths in blogs but, for the most part, bloggers who state facts are stating what they honestly believe to be fact. It is always up to the readers to verify that any information they receive is accurate information.

Video Blogging Is a Great Way to Remember Your Holiday Travels

October 1st, 2010 Comments off

The squeaking wheel gets the oil. It does not pay to be too timid. Most problems will not correct by itself. Staying quiet will not get us what we want and the other party will continue to be unaware of our predicament. All of us have an obligation to contribute for the betterment of the world around us. Travelers are one of the squeakiest groups of people in the planet. Rightly so because they deserve every penny of the money they are spending. Blogging is a form of service to fellow travelers and is potent way of voicing our concerns and opinions as Carl Larson recently did. An over fanatical ticket agent charged Carlson with the usual $50 bike fee when he checked a folding bike contained in a box within the standard weight and dimensions. Why? Because it is a bike and regulation states that bikes are charged $50. Larson blogged about his complaint on the Bicycle Transportation Alliance website. Other websites immediately picked it up. The airline lamented and refunded Carlson’s $50. An airline official informed him that they are officially changing their rules and that from now on; folding bikes contained in regulation size box will not be charged extra and will be treated like a regular bag. The travel industry is very aware and takes blogging very seriously. Many travelers looking for hotels online take what they read on the blogs more seriously than regular media because it fells more like getting an advice and not like an advertised endorsement. Bloggers often write in a casual and conversational way. It is better to find a specialty when starting a blog. A little technical knowledge, a computer and an internet connection is all you need at the beginning but it takes a lot of time once you get hooked doing it. Focus on a topic that you like and know much about and tell an interesting story. Video blogging is gaining popularity and is a very effective form of blogging. It is also a good way to remember your holiday travels. Video blogs contains am embedded video or a link to the video. This kind of blog can provide fellow travelers with the advice they are looking for in their next trip and does so without being too wordy. People get to actually see what you are talking about. You Tube is the most accepted video sharing site. It was founded in 2005 and permits bloggers to host and supervise their own blogging sites. Blogging in a very effective media not only to inform and express our opinion but also to push for change and thereby improve the world we live in.
