Travel Insurance – Tips On How To Find The Best Cover

November 7th, 2010 Comments off

Many of us like to travel abroad to pastures new at least once a year, and some of us like to jet off abroad even more often if we can. There are also many people that have to travel abroad as part of their work, and may find themselves heading overseas on a regular basis. Whether you are travelling for business or leisure, and whether you travel regularly or occasionally, it is important to remember that having travel insurance in place is of paramount importance for you and those travelling with you.
Travel insurance is available from a wide range of lenders, and there are different levels of cover that are designed to suit different needs and circumstances. You can get some pretty good deals on travel insurance cover, although you should remember that the cost of cover and the benefits of cover can vary from one provider to another. It is therefore vital that you compare cover from a number of providers, and in addition to checking and comparing the price you also read the small print, familiarise yourself with any restrictions or exclusions, and make sure that you are aware of the benefits.
When you are booking or arranging your travel insurance cover you will need to decide which type of policy is best suited to your needs. There are a number of options to select from, and a few of these are outlined below:
Single trip cover: Single trip travel insurance cover is ideal for those that only travel abroad occasionally, such as once a year or less, and this cover can be taken out when arranging your trip, either through the company that is arranging your flight and accommodation or by doing some research and comparing deals from other travel insurance providers. As the name suggest this type of travel insurance covers you for a single return trip.
Multi-trip travel insurance: If you travel abroad on a regular basis, it would be a pain to have to arrange separate cover each time you went, not to mention expensive. With multi-trip travel insurance cover you can enjoy being covered for a number of trips abroad without having to arrange cover separately each time.
Annual travel insurance cover: Annual travel insurance cover will provide protection for the whole year, so no matter how many times you travel over the course of that year you will be covered. Again, this can suit those that travel on a regular basis, and can save time, hassle, and money.
Group travel insurance: If you are travelling abroad as part of a group you can get some good deals on group cover that will protect everyone in the group. This is a far cheaper way of getting this valuable insurance than everyone taking out their own separate policy.
Winter sports cover: Many people like to jet off to a winter wonderland to enjoy skiing, snowboarding, and other winter sports. However, this can be a dangerous sport, and therefore you need specialist cover to protect you against the increased risks as well as to protect the expensive gear and equipment that you will be using.

Annual Travel Insurance: Simplifying Cover for Frequent Travellers

November 6th, 2010 Comments off

Travel insurance is essential for every trip, no matter how long your getaway or how far you plan to travel. But if you’re like countless travellers out there, thinking about and actually sorting your travel insurance arrangements is not at the top of your to-do list – primarily because it’s not the most exciting thing to think about with regard to your travels. Nevertheless, travel insurance is important and you should make time to arrange cover well before your date of departure. But, as if it weren’t hard enough to consider insurance for individual, once-a-year holidays, frequent travellers need to think about cover all the time. And if destinations vary greatly, getting a suitable insurance policy for each place of travel can be time consuming, costly and confusing. However, those who travel frequently throughout the year have a better option than to secure seperate policies for each trip. The answer is in annual travel insurance – a product that combines comprehensive cover, convenience and value, all under one policy. Annual travel insurance policies will often cover travellers for an unlimited number of trips within the span of twelve months. However, you might find that insurers will place a limit on how many days a singe trip can last – so if you tend to take extended trips, you’ll want to look out for this restriction. Some policies will also include a limited number of days’ cover for winter sport activities, such as skiing and snowboarding, at minimal or no extra charge. However, not all insurers will offer this, so it’s essential to compare annual travel insurance policies before committing to any one product. Another advantage to annual travel insurance is that buyers usually obtain better value by buying one policy that covers them for the entire year, rather than multiple policies for individual trips. Moreover, certain annual travel insurance policies will offer money-saving perks such as free cover for under-18s travelling with their family. No matter how you look at it, annual travel insurance ends up a better bargain for frequent travellers. Generally, if you travel more than two times a year, an annual travel insurance policy will be of value to you, in terms of the money you’ll save. But it’s also a big time saver, as you won’t have to compare and secure policies for each and every trip you take – so you’ll have more time to think about and plan all the fun aspects of your trips.

Travel Insurance Explained: Financial Default cover

November 3rd, 2010 Comments off

If an airline goes bankrupt before or during your holiday, it could be curtains for your holiday plans. Given that airlines are going bust on what now seems like a weekly basis, it is prudent to make sure that you have some protection in the form of financial default insurance.

A travel insurance policy which includes financial default cover will only pay out if an airline has completely ceased all operations due to bankruptcy proceedings. There may be a number of conditions attached to this type of cover, so it is important to make sure that you know what you are getting into.

Some of the less expensive travel insurance packages do not offer insurance against airline bankruptcy as standard, so it is well worth your while checking the exact wording of the terms and conditions of your policy before committing to buy.

Financial default cover is usually only applicable to airlines, cruise lines, and tour operators, and not to independent travel agencies, so if you are booking through an agent, make sure that they are licensed through a guarantee scheme such as ABTA.

Some package holidays use a combination of different travel suppliers, which can complicate the issue. Most financial default policies will only pay out if you have to miss your whole trip as a result of the bankruptcy of a travel supplier, so if you are flying out to the Caribbean to catch a cruise liner, and the airline that is taking you out there goes under, causing you to literally miss the boat, then you will be entitled to full compensation.

There may be a waiting period specified in the insurance contract, for example the travel supplier may have to go bust more than a week after you bought the insurance policy for it to be valid. This is to prevent a rush of late applications for insurance in the wake of the news that a travel supplier is about to go under.

Do not assume that every travel supplier will be covered by a financial default insurance plan, as most underwriters have what is called a white list of approved suppliers which you should check before committing to a particular policy.

The best policy is to buy your insurance from an independent supplier as soon as you can after booking your holiday, and make sure you check the small print before you sign.

Consumers left confused over travel insurance cover after volcanic ash saga

October 5th, 2010 Comments off

The recent volcanic ash fiasco caused uproar for many people, in an array of circumstances. Those that followed the news around the volcanic ash cloud would have see that it caused massive disruption to travellers, after a ban was enforced across UK airspace. However, this was only scratching at the surface of the problems to come, as many of those affected came to realise when reading the small-print on their travel insurance policies. A number of insurance companies refused to foot the bill for any extra expenses incurred as a result of the ash cloud that spread itself across a large area Europe, either based on the terms of their insurance policy, or the insurer’s interpretation of the wording provided. Every year, around 23 million travel insurance policies are taken out by travellers. Getting the right level of coverPopular high-street brands tend to focus on standard, simple risks that can be offered at a lower cost and are easier to provide cover for than the higher risk categories. However, a number of online only products have been known to provide minimal cover. This has left many of us feeling confused about how to opt for a policy offering the cover that is actually required, to avoid buying something we will later regret. You may be under the impression that all policies are similar, but don’t be fooled. With some 165 different brands offering varying terms and a number of different levels of cover to choose from, it is important to buy a policy that suits your needs. Travel insurance policies cover eventualities in at least 20 different sections, from skiing piste closures to pet passports. Consumers must be able to differentiate between the best insurance deals and the “bare bones” economy policies that could leave travellers in quite a predicament should they need to make a claim. But it isn’t as easy as simply searching for the best rates, as everyone is different, so the golden rule for finding the cheapest insurance policy that has everything you require is to consider your own personal circumstances. For example, how expensive is the laptop you will be taking with you? Will you be cruising around the Caribbean on an expensive cruise, or simply crossing the Channel on a day-trip?Are you likely to be jet-skiing while on holiday?Top three travel insurance claimsThe top three categories that brunt the majority of travel insurance claims start with medical, making up 57% of all claims, followed by cancellation and lost luggage. Insurers have mixed attitudes when it comes to pre-existing medical conditions. For example, some will readily accept those that suffer from diabetes, while others might charge a higher premium, or even reject the risk completely. It is very important to disclose all details to the insurer using the medical screening line when applying for a quote. Leaving out any pre-existing medical conditions could be an expensive mistake. If you do suffer from a medical condition and find your quotes appear to be high, you can contact the relevant charity as they may be able to recommend a suitable insurance provider. Many insurers will not cover those affected by a pandemic, which includes swine flu if this was the case. Some insurers will also void claims that are related to any alcohol-induced injuries, so if you are partial to a few alcoholic drinks while away, you should keep this in mind. CancellationsCancellation or curtailment of a holiday makes up 32% of all travel insurance claims, with limits varying greatly between insurers. It is very important to understand that any policy bought will cover the cost of irrecoverable deposits. For example, a £2,000 cancellation limit is unlikely to cover the cost of a Caribbean cruise. However, policies do not tend to cover every eventuality, for instance a volcanic eruption. Lost luggage makes up around 7% of all travel claims and the levels of cover can vary significantly. Some bank accounts offer free annual travel insurance to customers, but it is vital that you check level of cover, as some will only offer a basic policy. The valuables limit on a policy is generally quite low – usually just £250 – although some stratch up to £1,000. It is worth remembering that the personal possessions section under a home insurance policy may cover your possessions wherever they the are, so ensure you don’t double up on premiums. Removing the personal luggage element from a travel insurance policy could save you up to 15%. Always consider the excess that you would have to pay when making a claim, as these can differ dramatically and apply to each insurance section. For example, a stolen handbag could result in the policyholder paying a £60 excess for a new bag, £60 for the passport that was in the bag, and £60 for the cash that was stolen, resulting in a £180 bill before they get any compensation from the insurer. . What about natural disasters, such as a volcanic eruption? This event is a very unusual and each insurer will have their own interpretation of this peril. Some have responded by putting it under the travel delay section of the policy due to adverse weather conditions. But as the volcanic ash cloud is no longer an unexpected event, many will find it difficult to buy cover.

Travel Insurance Lack Cover for Heathrow Terminal 5

October 3rd, 2010 Comments off

It has been reported that some travel insurance policies are not offering cover for baggage lost by customers flying out of Heathrow’s Terminal 5. Thousands of items of luggage have been lost and delayed in the recent turmoil, and the British Airways’ website is still warning of problems for travelers. Currently, insurers including Direct Line and Churchill, both owned by Royal Bank of Scotland, have said they will exclude baggage loss and delays from new insurance policies. A spokesman for Direct Line stated: “It is a general principle of all insurance that it only covers unforeseen chance events. Once something becomes widely known like this it is no longer unforeseen. “Those who are not covered should have been alerted to this when they bought the policy. Policies bought before the decision was taken are not affected, so a customer who has annual cover, for example, will still be entitled to a pay out. Direct Line’s spokesman added: “Every claim we get we consider on its own merits anyway. ” A spokeswoman for the Association of British Insurers (ABI) said it was up to individual insurers whether they offered cover in these circumstances. “Insurance is there to pay for the unexpected, but some companies are taking the position that you can’t help which terminal you fly out of and are still offering cover,” she said. “Our advice is to check with your insurance provider. ” She added that passengers could take up claims for lost or delayed luggage with their flight operator. Many insurers are still offering cover, including Norwich Union, Saga and direct travel cover provider InsureandGo. InsureandGo’s managing director, Perry Wilson, said: “Some insurers are hiding behind the excuse that problems at Terminal 5 are not ‘unforeseen’ because they have been going on for weeks. That is like saying you’re not going to cover someone against being mugged in Johannesburg because crime is so rife there. ”
