In my travels through cyberspace, I have noticed an increasing number of websites and blogs discussing various forms of Internet-related addictive behavior. In fact, I have recently encountered the following online dependencies: porn, gambling, video games, comment addiction (i. e. , checking the comments on one’s blog), Internet addiction, blog addiction, Technorati addiction, forum addiction, information addiction, MySpace addiction, and addiction to Bloglines.
This inventory is obviously not an official list gathered from the medical or psychological literature. It is interesting to note, however, that Internet users themselves are the ones labeling their online behavior and the online behavior of others as “addictive. ”How Dangerous are Internet Addictions?
While the more “typical addictions” such as alcoholism and drug dependency are more established regarding the various forms of treatment and therapy that are available, employed, and researched, other dependencies, such as the above mentioned Internet-based addictions, are not. The question, however, needs to be asked: how serious are Internet addictions? On the other hand, this same patient might have viewed his world in an entirely different way had he started living in a more healthy manner and developed some quality interests, relationships, and hobbies. I think we have to learn how to balance our online lives with our lives outside of cyberspace. Remember the first website you ever visited? I do. It was Ford Motor Company’s corporate website. I don’t know what I was doing there, but that was my first experience with the World Wide Web. Remember the first time you ever saw a “dot com” television commercial? I do. It was an advertisement for NASDAQ and their website URL appeared at the bottom of the screen at the end of the commercial.

I also remember the day I bought my first 28. 8bps dialup modem. No longer would images take an hour to download. They only took a half hour! The first Flash website I ever saw was from a German marketing company, and it was just about the coolest thing I’d ever seen. All this seems forever ago, and maybe in terms of technology it is, but we’re only talking back to the early- to mid-1990s. Oh how things have changed, eh?

Today I have about a dozen tabs open in my browser window, my Outlook is never shut down, frequently my iTunes is playing something catchy from this decade, and I’m chatting with my fingers on one of my Instant Messengers. I also spend a lot of time in the world of social networking, blogging, and social media.

As a personal hobby I write for, and maintain, at least three personal blogs. Of course I have them tied to all my social networking outlets like Facebook, Twitter, and Digg. One of my blogs is all about sports, another is about all the movies I’ve watched so far this year, and a new on e I launched is just me writing about the contents of my daydreams. It’s a bit of a social experiment and one that I hope turns into something interesting.

See, that’s the power of high speed internet today, and it’s something that was always there but needed to be developed, nurtured, and matured. Each person today has the ability to stop being a pure consumer of news and information and becoming an actual creator and contributor. That’s the power of social networking and social media. Each person can be armed with the ability to instantly report something of interest, or breaking news happening right in their neighborhood. Citizens of the World Wide Web today are the eyes and ears of the world.

If you haven’t been down this road yourself before, and you are part of an internet marketing busienss opportunity or the best affiliate marketing program you’ve ever seen, you have more than likely seen this scenario with someone else. You cringe when you see your credit card bill for your monthly investment in the business or your products. You have stuffed your contact file into a drawer. You have shoved all the product samples into the closet where at least they won’t collect too much dust. You have stopped working. You haven’t placed any ads, and you have been avoiding your sponsor.

Why? What happened?

To answer that, let’s take a quick look at why you joined to begin with. Let’s say you joined a home based business opportunity where you attended a business presentation meeting: Did you get excited by the hype and thrill where all the leaders and top-10 money earners smiled down from the stage and told you that YOU could do this too?

Or, if it was an internet marketing business opportunity, did you get excited by the video testimonials of the others who made a bunch of sales and had some big paychecks to show for it, and picture yourself as the next testimonial?

Why DID you join?

Let’s say you joined a food or nutrition business opportunity. Do you enjoy eating those types of products? Do you even enjoy the field of nutrition?

What if you joined a financial services opportunity. Are the services offered of value to you? Do you use them? Do you need them? Are you interested in whatever financial services are offered to begin with?

Look around at the most successful and happiest people you know – in and out of internet and home based business opportunities. What do you notice about them? I know an engineer who absolutely loves his job, and when he’s not helping design industrial structures for his employer, he enjoys reading Architectural Digest and planning home and landscape renovations.

You will notice that people who are successful marketing a travel opportunity tend to love travel, and use their product to take their own vacations. You will notice that the most successful representatives selling candles or cosmetics always use the products themselves.

Have you ever noticed that writers are also avid readers? Or that most musicians who play instruments or sing also enjoy listening to music? In my case, I enjoy writing about internet marketing and home based business opportunities. When I’m at a restaurant or on a plane, you will typically see me bent over a Success or Entrepreneur Magazine.

This is really the key observation: Notice when someone’s business and way of making a living has actually become a lifestyle. If you align yourself with an internet marketing business opportunity or other home based business opportunity that reflects the type of person you are: your interests, your passions, and your personal marketing style and strengths, you will find that you are more likely to enjoy working the business.

You might discover that you look forward to the work! You will be more likely to stick with it, and ultimately succeed, and thus getting to the point where there is little difference between your business and your lifestyle.

And that, my friend, is a great place to be!
