The indoor bonsai tree has a long and fascinating history ranging from monks and the aristocracy to the general population.   Let’s travel with the bonsai tree so that we can gain an understanding and appreciation for this unique art form.   Keep in mind that the term bonsai refers to any tree or shrub in miniature that is kept in a pot.

Bonsai tree Born in China

We are born not it Japan, as people might think from watching Karate Kid, but in China somewhere around 700 A. D.   At this time our name is not actually bonsai, but rather Penjing.   Penjing is translated from the character “Pen” which means tray and “Jing” which means scenery.   The first documented proof of our existance is in the tomb of Prince Zhang Huai who died in 706 A. D.    On the walls of the tomb there is a picture of a servant carrying a miniature landscape, and in another a servant is carrying a plant in a pot.   The Chinese were fascinated with us, with miniaturization in general, believing that miniaturization concentrated the mystical and magical powers of the tree.   It is not clear whether we were kept indoors or outside at this time.   In China we are are characterized by sparse foliage and thick trunks which often resemble birds, dragons and other animals.

Travels to Japan

Our next destination is Japan.   Experts argue just when we made the trip, but it is agreed that we traveled somewhere between the Heian period (794 – 1191A. D. ) and the Kamakura period (1185 – 1333).   We are now called Bonsai, from the character “Bon” meaning tray and “Sai” meaning plant.   Though we have a new name in this new country, it is really very similar.   In fact the Chinese character for “Pen” and the Japanese symbol for “Bon” are identical.   There is a Japanese scroll attributed to the year 1195 that seems to refer to bonsai.   In the beginning bonsai in general, and indoor bonsai trees in particular, were limited to Buddhist monks who were looking to bring some nature and life into their drab quarters.   Over time, our keeping and care expanded to the aristocracy, and was seen as a sign of honor and prestige.   In the 1300′s we made our way to the general population.   It was now that great strides in the techniques for training bonsai occurred.   This is probably why much of the general population believes that we were born here.   For the Japanese, we represent the harmony between man, the soul and nature.   Japanese indoor bonsai trees are usually trained to closely resemble their larger counterparts.

Our second full day in Mallorca started with an early morning stroll along the Pine Walk promenade in Port de Pollença, a beautiful seafront town on the northeast side of the island. The expansive Bay of Pollença was shimmering in front of us in different hues of blue and green. Walking along the pine-fringed walkway beside attractive hotels and villas was a great way of enjoying the morning. After about an hour and a half we sat down at our hotel, the Hostal Goleta, and savoured our freshly baked baguettes for breakfast.

Around 10 am we left Port de Pollença and started driving westwards and up into the Tramuntana mountain region. For me, the Tramuntana with its jagged limestone peaks, verdant valleys with pine trees, olive groves and almond trees, is the definite highlight of Mallorca’s landscapes. On the north side of the island the limestone peaks drop precipitously into the blue depths of the Mediterranean.

We made our first stop at one of Mallorca’s primary tourist destinations: Santuari de Lluc, a monastery which has been the spiritual centre of the island for more than 800 years. Even today, the Monastery of Lluc is an important destination for pilgrims. The famous boys choir of the monastery, in existence for more than 500 years, is called Els Blavets (for their blue cassocks). It regularly draws large groups of spectators during its performances.

We arrived early enough before the big crowds rolled in. Only a few tour buses were parked in the parking lots and visitors continued to arrive. We entered the imposing monastery and arrived in a quiet courtyard that features a statue of the founder of the Sacred Heart Missionary Congregation. From here we crossed through another building into the courtyard that leads to the monastery’s church, which was built between 1622 and 1684 in the Renaissance-Baroque style. The main attraction of the church is the dark madonna, “La Moreneta de Lluc”, a dark-coloured statue of the Virgin Mary holding baby Jesus.

Next to the monastery is a hill which offers an excellent panorama over the monastery and the adjacent mountain valleys. I arrived at the top of the hill as the bells were tolling at 11 am and enjoyed the view of the serene mountain panorama. We walked past several groups of school children on our way out before we continued our drive on the winding roads of the Tramuntana Mountains. \ Our next destination was Sa Calobra, a tiny village in a scenic cove on the north side of the island. The route down to Sa Calobra features a breathtaking panorama over the north coast of Mallorca and numerous switchbacks curves. The 12. 5 km long road covers an altitude differential of 780 metres and is considered a masterwork of engineering, planned by the Italian engineer Antonio Paretti and completed in 1932. The “Nus de sa Corbata”, literally translated, the “knot in the tie”, features a 270 degree curve and a bridge. At the bottom of the road we were amazed at the amount of bus parking spaces. Several buses were already parked here, but we were wondering how busy this tiny hamlet could get during high season when the entire bus parking lot was full. Apparently on some days, upwards of 30,000 visitors descend on this village, and we counted ourselves lucky that we were here in May during pre-season. Sa Calobra features a small beach that is flanked by several restaurants. Bus tourists were taking a walk through the village and populating the waterfront bars. We walked back to the car and enjoyed the breathtaking drive back up the mountain and onto the sideroad to Cala Tuent, a small gravel beach in the shadow of Mallorca’s highest mountain, the Puig Major. The contrast of Mallorca’s green pine trees, the blue jewel tones of the Mediterranean and the grey and brown-coloured coastal rocks delighted our eyes.

Back up in the mountains we then passed two dams: the Embassament Gorg Blau and the Embassament de Cuber. Both water reservoirs are located in the highest part of the Tramuntana mountain range, and their light blue and turquoise waters stand out against the rugged mountain panorama. The Embassament de Cuber or Cuber Lake is a place from where many hiking trails start in Mallorca. The Serra de Tramuntana in general is a fabulous destination for walking, hiking and biking. We were amazed at the large number of professional cyclists that populate the backroads of Mallorca’s mountains. The island obviously is a great training ground for cycling professionals.

Following a group of more leisurely cyclists, we continued on the winding mountain roads through the Tramuntana region. Our final destination for the day was the mountain town of Sóller, a popular tourist town in the centre of the mountain chain. We were going to spend the night at a rural hotel called Finca Ca’s Sant, a working orange plantation in the middle of town. Sóller, named after the Arab word “suliar” for “golden bowl”, is known as the “orange bowl of Mallorca”. It has the perfect climate and location for the many orange groves that brought the town prosperity. Starting in the eight century A. D. , Arab settlers introduced their unique irrigation techniques and they started to cultivate oranges and olives on the slopes of the Serra de Tramuntana. Most of the fruits were exported to France which resulted in a strong cultural link between Sóller and France.

Around 4 pm we arrived at our rural hotel, Finca Ca’s Sant, and the owners, Rafael and Lourdes Forteza, welcomed us. They showed us to our impressive spacious bedroom, located in a side building with a nice terrace. I requested Rafael to give me a tour through the property and he graciously explained that Finca Ca’s Sant has a history of more than 300 years. As a matter of fact, the stones of the main building are talking history, showing the different stages of construction over the years. Rafael then took me inside the large stone house and showed me the large formal dining room which features heavy walnut furniture that was built in the 18th century. The room is adorned with original paintings by Mallorcan artists, and glass chandeliers from the renowned Gordiola factory light up the room. The piano on the wall comes with a special story: it originally was built in France, then travelled to Cuba and was finally transported to Mallorca. Famous singer Annie Lennox has stayed here at Finca Ca’s Sant three times and she played on this very piano. In the hallway, Rafael showed me two original historic paintings: one painting in dark colours features a cleric of some sort, but the handwritten description below the picture was painted over in black. Rafael explained that this was done during the Spanish Civil War because the Republicans had a highly anti-clerical mindset. A second picture next to the entrance features two bullet holes that also originated during the Spanish Civil War. In front of the stairs, a table displayed various products made by Finca Ca’s Sant: orange jam, orange-flavoured salt and a recipe book with authentic recipes from the Forteza family. Orange products are produced by a local organization that employs people with disabilities.

The library and breakfast room to the left are also equipped with vintage furniture and paintings by local artists. Guests can relax with a good book or a magazine in the library. More Mallorcan glass chandeliers brighten up the breakfast room. Rafael then took me outside and showed me the attractive swimming pool area which saw the addition of a pool ramp for disabled visitors last year. On a stroll through the property he showed me the little “casita”, a private little guest house right in the middle of the orange orchards. From here the mountain panorama surrounding Sóller became visible, with the Puig Major, the island’s highest peak, overlooking the valley from the north. Rafael explained that Finca Ca’s Sant is actually composed of 18 smaller fincas and now makes up a property of 30,000 square metres (about 7. 4 acres) in the middle of town, about 600 metres away from the town square. Running an orange plantation is extremely time-consuming and Rafael and his son spend many hours daily picking oranges during harvest time. At other times of the year the orange trees need to be pruned and maintained, so there is always a lot of work at Finca Ca’s Sant. I also learned that there are more than 4,000 varieties of oranges, but only about 40 of them are commercialized. Rafael replaced all the orange trees on his property a few years ago and intentionally chose a variety that would ripen in January and February, at temperatures below 18 degree. This type of variety is less prone to insect infestation and therefore requires very little, if any, insect control. As a result, the oranges from Finca Ca’s Sant are grown almost completely organically.

It is also possible at Finca Ca’s Sant to adopt an orange tree. Anyone who adopts an orange tree here will receive 10 kilograms of naturally ripened oranges, 16 glasses of marmalade, 1 jar of orange salt as well as 1 bottle of orange liqueur. In addition, members of the orange tree adoption program have access to various discounts for future stays at Finca Ca’s Sant. Rafael indicated that the program is very popular with his guests, and many of them have become repeat visitors at Finca Ca’s Sant.

Now it was late afternoon and it was time to explore the town. We had a shower in our beautiful bathroom and got ready for the 10 minute walk into downtown Sóller. This town of 13,000 people is one of Mallorca’s most popular travel destinations. It is connected with the capital Palma de Mallorca via a historic railway called the Ferrocarril de Sóller and nicknamed “The Red Arrow”. This electric railway was completed in 1911 and has been transporting people back and forth for almost 100 years. Today it is primarily the tourists that take the train and it is one of the town’s main attractions. From the train station of Sóller one can try out another vintage transportation method: the electric tram that connects the town of Sóller with Port de Sóller, which lies 4 km away on the coast. Along with various other towns in Mallorca, this is another example of an inland town that has a port town several kilometers away. This originally happened because of the threat of pirates that would frequently attack the coastal settlements; as a result the main towns were located several kilometers inland. The narrow streets took us out on to Plaça Constitució, Sóller’s main square, whose architectural highlights include the church of Sant Bartomeu. The original structure of this church dates from the 13th century and most of the current interior is of Baroque style. Next to the church’s neo-gothic façade is another landmark: the Banco de Sóller, designed in Modernista style in 1912 by the famous Catalan architect Joan Rubió i Bellver, a student of Antoni Gaudí.

The city hall of Sóller is located to the right of the cathedral. Numerous cafés and restaurants flank the square, which is an extremely popular gathering spot for locals and tourists. The vintage electric tram passes through every twenty minutes or so. We sat down at one of the cafés and ordered some local food: a seafood and a vegetarian paella which were absolutely delicious. After our filling meal we strolled up to the historic train station of Sóller, which is located in a fortified house that dates back to 1606. A museum with works by Pablo Picasso and Joan Miró is located inside the train station which is the departure point for the narrow-gauge railway to the capital of Palma as well as for the tram that goes to Port de Sóller. As the sun started to set, the main square of Sóller started to fill up with people. Families with young children were sitting on the open space surrounding the fountain, a group of musicians was playing Spanish music and walking from table to table, and some Brazilian capoeira dancers were entertaining a growing crowd with their mixture of dance, acrobatics and martial arts. We ended our day with an ice cream and a slow stroll back to Finca Ca’s Sant to rest up for another day of discoveries in Mallorca’s Tramuntana Mountains.

 

It has been seventeen years since the launch of the Hubble Telescope. The cost to the United States and the European Union was originally projected at about 500 million dollars. The program’s costs are now estimated to be over 5 billion dollars. The Hubble’s costs were criticized prior to its launch and the early problems with the telescope’s imaging system further hurt the public’s initial perception of the project.

However, the problems of the Hubble mission have long been corrected. In addition, the early critics were wrong as the cost of the project has provided an incredible return on money spent. The ongoing Hubble mission has provided a source of information to the world’s scientific community that could not have been obtained through any telescope on Earth. Indeed, over the last decade, the Hubble Telescope has delivered hundreds of amazing pictures from the farthest reaches of the Universe.

One reason that the cost of the Hubble is so high is that it is the only telescope ever designed to be serviced in orbit 330 miles above the Earth by astronauts. To date, there have been four servicing missions, with a fifth and final mission event planned for September 2008. In the launch of the fifth space shuttle mission to the Hubble Space Telescope, seven astronauts are scheduled to repair and improve the observatory’s capabilities. The mission will make the telescope operational through the year 2013.

Of course, the reason for the final mission and the extension of the Hubble Telescope’s capability is the incredible scientific success of the project over the last fifteen years. Hubble does not travel to stars, planets, and galaxies. It snaps pictures of them as it orbits the Earth. The pictures that the Hubble Telescope has stored and transmitted to Earth have resolved some long standing problems in astronomy. It has also created questions that require scientists to produce new theories of explanation.

Consider that the Hubble Telescope has looked through space to provide pictures of regions where gas, dust, and other materials combined to form stars thousands of years ago. These star forming areas are called nebula by scientists. The remaining materials after a star is born are believed to further expand and form planets. Pictures provided by the Hubble Telescope have given scientists an improved understanding of the processes inside a nebula. Hubble has provided incredible pictures from space of the Ant Nebula, Eskimo Nebula, Cats Eye Nebula, Cone Nebula, Perfect Storm Nebula and Triffid Nebula.

The Hubble Telescope has also greatly expanded scientists understanding of black holes. Scientists have theorized that black holes have a deep and profound connection with galaxies. Work conducted with the Hubble indicates that black holes are probably common to the centers of all galaxies. Hubble has also established that the masses of the nuclear black holes and properties of the galaxies are closely related.

Hubble is responsible for the dating of the age of the Universe at 12-14 billion years. This is a much closer date than the 10 to 20 billion year range that scientists estimated prior to the Hubble launch.

While Hubble helped to refine estimates of the age of the Universe, it also cast doubt on theories about its future. Astronomers used the telescope to observe distant supernovae and uncovered evidence that, far from decelerating under the influence of gravity, the expansion of the Universe may in fact be accelerating. This acceleration was later measured more accurately by other ground-based and space-based telescopes which confirmed Hubble’s finding, but the cause of this acceleration is currently very poorly understood.

The ultimate legacy of Hubble may well be the Hubble Deep Field and the Hubble Ultra Deep Field images. The images of distant galaxies, around ten billion years ago, were a result of Hubble’s unmatched sensitivity at visible wavelengths to create images. These images have generated many scientific papers and provided a new window into the development of the Universe.

Hubble also teamed up with a fleet of X-ray, gamma-ray, and visible-light observatories in a quest to analyze the sources of gamma-ray bursts. Gamma-ray bursts may represent the most powerful explosions in the Universe since the Big Bang. Before 1997 astronomers were stumped: although they had observed more than 2,000 “bursts,” they couldn’t determine whether these fireballs occurred in our galaxy or at remote distances. Hubble images showed clearly that the bursts actually reside in far away galaxies rife with star formation.

The Hubble has given us pictures of merging galaxies, asteroids, new galaxies, the rings around Uranus, and other planets. It has given scientists insights into star formation and star death. The Hubble Deep Field has produced pictures of distant galaxies nearly ten billion years ago. Hubble has produced information on Black Holes, Gamma-Ray bursts, as well as other scientific mysteries of the Universe.

To date, the Hubble’s contribution to astronomy and science has been astounding. The understanding of the origins and functions of the Universe increase with each picture.

In 2008, astronauts will install upgraded equipment which will would boost the telescope’s observing capability by at least a factor of 10. Pictures from the Hubble Telescope will continue until the year 2013.

After 2013, the James Webb Telescope will replace the Hubble in space. Until then, scientists and astronomers throughout the world should continue to be amazed by the pictures transmitted by the Hubble Telescope as it continues to picture space through time.

The first ever created maps were made not for economic reasons but more for religious purpose. The early maps of the world display religious icons similar to the icons that are found on the pages of the Book of Kells.   During the 12th century the map of the world were created with the shaped of a T and O. And it portrays the world as circle and is divided by a T-shaped cross having Jerusalem as its center.   The circle has been associated more with religious belief than with any scientific findings that the world was round. The circle more of represents the God’s affection that is perfect in every aspect.   The T and O map is most commonly used by the church to represent the world unfolding according to God’s will. One drawback of the T and O map is that it cannot be used for travel but only for religious venerations. On the advent of the 15th century although the map is still created with the T and O image however some additional drawings of real people and continents can be seen.   Nevertheless, its functions remain to be the same as its 12th century counterpart. There are also some manuscripts that have started on focusing outside the secular world and we may say have started on some features of the map as we come to know it today. There are additional features like drawings of real rivers with its corresponding names, real named places complete with geographical locations but still with religious icon drawings. This indicates the last of the 15th century map.  The additional information on the maps during the last period of the 15th century was gathered by travelers. The maps created in Europe were the only maps that may be considered as close to accurate and this was made possible through the travels of Marco Polo. They no longer believed that Atlas a Greek mythological character holds the earth on his shoulders and that he plays with earth like a ball. With the creation of maps the world was no longer engulfed with mystical darkness that used to scare people into exploring the land beyond. Plus with the creation of today’s maps which makes it even more beneficial for people who loves to travel since it does not only helps them to arrive safely in their destination it also allows them to return home. Maps also help the economic world since it allows for exchange or the trade of goods and services between nations.

You can choose to stay in hotels or in apartments, it is really only a personal choice and how well you want to live and how much cooking you want to do yourself and where you want to live.

Renting an apartment really requires you to have some knowledge of Russian/ Ukrainian or you can easily get tricked to get a bad apartment. Apartment itself can be fantastic, but the building it is in, can be in terrible state(Russian style really).

However, it can also give you the touch of authenticity if you want to experience this.

They have two hotels, both are quite central and good quality for a nice price.

First one, oldest and rooms a bit worn down but ok quality and service is good, and good food in restaurant. Breakfast is ok, and they serve you in nice locations.

Black Sea Hotel

The eleven-storeyed building of the hotel “Black Sea” is situated in the very historical centre of Odessa, only five minutes on foot from the railway station. The hotel accommodates 207 comfortable rooms. Each room has air-conditioner, bathroom or shower, toilet, telephone, TV-set.

The hotel includes restaurant-bar with different fish courses, express-bar with wide range of alcohol and alcohol-free drinks, different starters and confectionary products. You will be pleasantly struck there by the superb service. There is also a night club there.

One can find in the lobby of the hotel the currency exchange, souvenir shop and the service bureau, where one can send fax to any country of the world or make a copy.

You may order breakfast, dinner or supper right into the room at any time. The hotel has also a laundry, where you may have your clothes cleaned and your shoes repaired. The Black Sea hotel possesses its own comfortable swimming-pool (the usage of which is free of charge for the guests of the hotel), gymnasium, sauna, solarium, massage room.

Next recommendation is;

This is the hotel me and my wife use every time we stay in Odessa now. Price is good and rooms are modern and clean. Service good and food ok. However the best thing is, if you like markets (Russian style) and you want to be close (15 minutes walk) from centre, there is your choice.

We like it and use it, simple as that. Several categories of rooms, however price around 450 Gryvnas ( 1 USD = 5. 05 Gryvnas) gives you a good room, howewer you can get very nice rooms for around 550 Gryvnas.

Chernoye More New hotel

In 2006 there has appeared a new 3-star hotel Chernoye More on the 7-9th floors of a brand new shopping mall. Being close to the Odessa center, the hotel offers attractive rates and good quality. Tidy rooms of delicate pastel shades, light and spacious lobby and halls, green spaces with lush palm trees create relaxing and cozy atmosphere.

If you want to indulge in luxury and have a nice time for an affordable price, here is a choice.

However in fall and winter it is far from centre and you can not enjoy the beach and arcade only 5 minutes away from hotel.

But location and rooms are very nice. Recommend for stay in spring and summer.

Four star hotel Palace Del Mar is situated in the most picturesque district of Odessa-in Arcadia. The building of the hotel is the original example of the classical style. Chornoye More hotel

Close to the center of the city, only ten minutes walk from the railway station, the Chornoye More Hotel has customary amenities of a standard Ukrainian hotel. It offers more or less reasonable prices, though least expensive rooms are not perfect. The hotel proved to be a good option for tourist groups due to number of similar rooms. Each of 33 hotel rooms has air-conditioning, direct dial phone, cable TV, hairdryer and bathroom accessories.

Morskoy hotel

If you are visiting Odessa for its beaches and bright nightlife this hotel will definitely meet your expectations. Located right on the seashore by the sandy beach of Arcadia, the Morskoy Hotel is in a few steps from Ibiza, Itaka, Pago, and Tropicana Night Clubs. So this place is not for solitude seekers in summertime. Nice hotel, but on the beach far from centre, clear hit in the summer.

Palladium hotel

The Palladium Hotel is not for the solitude seekers. With one of the most popular Night Clubs on the lower floor (open October-April), the modern style hotel offers extravagant rooms with equally extravagant names.

Passage hotel

Passage is a tourist class hotel located right in the very heart of Odessa historical center. The beautiful building faces the Deribasovskaya Street and Sobornaya square park with the Cathedral. This hotel is for budget-minded travelers, who do not wish to spend lots on accommodation and willing to set up with some imperfections. Very old fashioned, Rooms not good, but you can find a bargain for large rooms here. Very central location, and gives you feel of being in old castle almost.

Yunost hotel

Price from: USD 44 Location: Franzusky Boulevard, Arcadia area

Located within 10 minutes walk to the seaside and famous Arcadia Beaches, the Yunost Hotel is a medium-priced option for summer holidays in Odessa. After recent renovation the hotel offers freshly remodeled rooms, tidy and brisk restaurant. Plus, friendly and hospitable personnel was always a merit of the Yunost hotel. New hotel, far from centre, maybe a choice in summer, lots of tourists here.

Outside Odessa, and areas to visit in southern Ukraine

Visit the Crimea region.

If you are going to the Crimea it is a 12 hour overnight train ride costing around 10 USD (2 persons sleeper 25 USD, very nice!). If you buy your ticket on the day you are leaving (not recommended) there is one group of cashier windows where you buy your ticket in the train station. If you buy your ticket on any other day (i. e. at least one day in advance) there is a completely separate group of cashier windows where the ticket must be purchased. As the lines can take up to 30 minutes make sure you are in the right one. Nobody in the train station will speak any international language other than Russian. In Simferopol you can take a trolleybus to Yalta via Alushta. The beaches on Crimea in summer are awfully crowded and the beachresorts are very noisy. Its better to go to East Crimea on the Sea of Azov.

If you need tips here, I can provide you with a list of activities, hotels and so forth to make you going for weeks in Crimea.

It’s a fantastic place to visit in spring and summer, even In fall if weather is good.

So I recommend people to go there.

Either by train or by taxi. A taxi will run you around 150-200 USD for up to 3 persons with luggage.

I hope you will try Ukraine some day, it is really worth the experience. Especially Odessa which is a city which can serve as your entry point into Ukraine. It is really worth the money spent, and you will get to see lots of history, mixed with modern lifestyle in the ever so lively Odessa center, with clubs and restaurants.

Working with an online travel agency to book a cruise can be daunting, since you are not actually face-to-face with a representative. My discoveries of Detroit were slowly but surely coming to an end, and I had seen so many interesting places already in my whirlwind tour over the last four days. Just before I was ready to hop across the border to Windsor again, I had one more adventure on my schedule: a biking tour of Southwest Detroit to cover Corktown and Mexicantown.

After a filling breakfast at the Inn on Ferry Street I took their complimentary shuttle downtown to Rivard Plaza, right next to the Detroit Riverwalk. At 10 am I met Kelly Kavanaugh, co-owner ofWheelhouse Detroit, Downtown Detroit’s first bike rental facility for more than 30 years. Wheelhouse also provides bicycle repairs and service and offers a variety of tours of different Detroit neighbourhoods.

Wheelhouse Detroit was founded by friends Kelli Kavanaugh and Karen Gage, two young women who have been active in the Detroit non-profit and urban planning scene for years. Equipped with advice from fellow entrepreneurs, start-up funding from the city’s micro-credit program and their own savings they embarked on their entrepreneurial venture and bought 30 bicycles which includes comfortable cruisers, city mountain bikes, kids bikes, trailers and even a tandem.

Their bikes are made by Kona, a philanthropically inclined manufacturer that donates bicycles to non-profit organizations in Africa. Along with other people I have met over the last four days, Kelli and Karen are an example of the new breed of Detroit entrepreneurs who combine their love for the city with hard work and entrepreneurial creativity.

On a brilliant but rather cool and windy October day Kelli and I headed off westwards along the the Detroit Riverwalk and quickly passed the General Motor Renaissance Centre and Hart Plaza, the civic centre of Detroit. The Detroit International Riverfront covers an area stretching from the Ambassador Bridge to Belle Isle and encompasses numerous parks, restaurants, retail shops, skyscrapers and residential areas along the Detroit River. Hundreds of millions of dollars have been raised in the last few years to revitalize this extensive area.

The Detroit Riverwalk is a recreational multipurpose path that stretches 5. 5 miles (almost 9 km) along Detroit’s riverfront and provides separate lanes for pedestrians and bicyclists or inline skaters. Wheelhouse Detroit is located inside Rivard Plaza, an outdoor space that features the Cullen Family Carousel, an inlaid granite map of the Detroit River, fountains and gardens. Rivard Plaza was opened in June of 2007 and also features the Riverwalk Café.

Cycling west on the Riverwalk, Kelli started to tell me about her venture and about her passion for cycling in Detroit. As the city is quite spread out and a lot of the traffic concentrates on the city’s characteristic sunken expressways, the downtown area is surprisingly free of traffic congestion and cycling-friendly. In my past four days in Detroit I did not encounter any traffic jams downtown, a surprising experience when you come from a congested place like Toronto.

As we pedaled against the wind we passed by several more Detroit landmarks – Cobo Arena, the Cobo Convention Centre and the Joe Louis Arena – home of the Detroit Red Wings. Leaving the downtown area behind we headed into southwest Detroit.

The first neighbourhood that greeted us was Corktown, Detroit’s oldest neighbourhood, so named after the Irish immigrants from County Cork that settled here. The houses in this area date back to 1834 and feature nicely restored Victorian homes, many of them brightly painted. Corktown also has many cool gathering spots and eateries, including the funky Zeitgeist Gallery, a bar called Nemo’s which was voted No. 3 “perfect sports bar in the US by Sports Illustrated , and LJ. ‘s – a hip karaoke place, as well as a wide range of other diverse restaurants.

We snaked our way through this pleasant neighbourhood and crossed over a railway bridge that provided a perfect view of one of Detroit’s most stunning architectural structures: the Michigan Central Depot, also called the Michigan Central Station. Although now abandoned and in poor condition, the Michigan Central Station is a railroad station that was built in 1913 for the Michigan Central Railroad. Its main Beaux-Arts train station is flanked by an 18 storey office tower, a monumental building whose outline dominates South-West Detroit’s skyline. Due to its sheer size and its magnificent architectural detailing, the Michigan Central Depot is still one of Detroit’s most impressive buildings, despite its sad current state.

Past the railroad bridge we arrived in Mexicantown, a vibrant neighbourhood that has undergone significant economic growth in the last few years. Kelly showed me the Michigan International Welcome Centre, a brand-new commercial development in close proximity to the Ambassador Bridge. 85 businesses will welcome visitors in The Mercado, and they will cater to locals and out-of-towners alike with a broad assortment of merchandise.

Further west we cycled by a long strip of Mexican restaurants that include popular eateries such as Mexican Village, El Zocalo, Evie’s Tamales, Lupita’s and Xochimilco. A ride through this neighbourhood revealed an extensive collection of late Victorian homes fronted by large trees. The main streets in the area are Bagley Street and Vernor Street which are flanked by numerous storefronts and eateries.

Away from the main thoroughfares and tucked into the neighbourhood is St. Anne De Detroit Catholic Church, the eighth church in this location whose cornerstone was laid in 1886. The church was originally founded on July 26, 1701, two days after Antoine Mothe de la Cadillac (the founder of Detroit) and his French settlers arrived. Today it is the second oldest continuously operating Roman Catholic parish in the United States. Nowadays the congregation includes many Hispanic parishioners who come together to worship in this impressive Gothic Revival structure.

One stop on our bicycling tour included the Hotel Yorba, which inspired the hit single by Detroit garage rock band “The White Stripes”. Today this former hotel provides subsidized housing. We started cycling back to the main road and passed by Clark Park, a large public park on Detroit’s southwest side. Cycling back east on Vernor we saw another strip of Mexican-owned businesses.

On the way back we made a stop in front of the Michigan Central Station where Kelly explained that this is the departure point for the annual “Tour de Troit” event, a 40-mile cycling tour of Detroit that has been attracting biking enthusiasts since 2001. Both Kelli and her business partner Karen have been actively involved in helping to organize this popular biking event. Attendance increased from 650 participants in 2007 to 1100 participants in 2008. Kelly explained that biking is definitely taking off in Detroit. The Tour de Troit event also raises funds for dedicated bicycle trails.

We now turned onto Michigan Avenue, one of Detroit’s main thoroughfares. Stopping regularly we had a look at various bars, cafes and galleries that populate this stretch of the road. One of our final stops was at the Old Tiger Stadium, the former home of the Detroit Tigers baseball team. The stadium was originally opened in 1912 and unfortunately partially demolished in 2008. A group of dedicated local citizens is fighting to keep the remaining portions of the stadium intact.

Our tour concluded with a ride through Detroit’s downtown business district and ended back atWheelhouse’s location on Rivard Plaza. Given that I am an avid bicycling enthusiast myself, exploring Detroit on two wheels was a real highlight of my five-day stint in this city. Bicycling is simply the best way of discovering a city – allowing you to cover great ground at manageable speeds while getting much needed exercise. Being able to easily stop anywhere is a great added benefit for an avid travel photographer like me.

Now thoroughly invigorated I thanked Kelli for introducing me to a completely different side of Detroit and set off to have lunch in the open outdoor space in front of the Wintergarden at the Renaissance Centre. The “RenCen”, the international headquarters of General Motors, consists of seven skyscrapers centered around the 73-story central tower that holds the Detroit Marriot Hotel. This structure has also been the highest building in Michigan since 1977.

The top of the hotel holds Coach Insignia, a fine dining restaurant with the most fabulous views of the city. In 2003 GM renovated the entire complex at a cost of $500 million which added the five-story Wintergarden, a light-flooded glass-enclosed atrium that overlooks the Detroit River. I grabbed my lunch, went outside and enjoyed the fall sun and the magnificent view across the river to Windsor while reflecting on my five action-packed days in Detroit.

Shortly after I called the shuttle service of the Inn on Ferry Street and minutes later I got whisked away. I made a final stop in Greektown, one of Detroit’s most popular entertainment districts. Most of the houses along Monroe Street date back to the Victorian era and today feature restaurants and cafes on the main level. The Greektown Casino is a major attraction in the area.

This exciting morning had concluded my visit to Detroit. I picked up my suitcase, hopped in my car and took the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel back to Canada. On the way back to Toronto I reflected on what an exciting and fascinating destination Detroit had been. During these past few days I got to see so many different facets of Detroit, and I had a chance to meet several people who are truly passionate about their city. It’s always great to get to know a city from the perspective of an insider. I had had a thoroughly great time in Detroit and over the past five days I had seen so many things I had never expected. And I realized there were so many more places I didn’t get to see.

Well, I guess I’ll have to leave something for next time…
