when we reach our destination, we’re settled in our hotel, we will enjoy the food, the weather, swimming in the pool, the sea, the culture programs in the evening, dancing, snooker, large cinema screens, and on our second day we do the same thing again.

On our third day, we do same thing again. It is now more like a routine and we are kind of getting bored of doing the same thing. We will plan something different for the fourth day, something more adventurous, something unusual. How about a desert safari? Leaving early the next morning in the jeep. Have fun for half a day and return by lunch time. We plan the safari for the forth day and we pay the fees in advance.

So, on the fourth day, we wake up early, we dress in line with of trip; we put our sunglasses on, we take scarves as there may be a lot of sand so we can cover our faces. We have our breakfast early, we choose a light option as we may feel sick on the trip otherwise.

Mr H and family are ready and waiting for the safari jeep to arrive. Mr H and family are off on safari. Unfortunately, Mr H’s jeep loses control on driving round a sharp bend in the road and the jeep is involved in an accident. Mr H doesn’t know what has happened for months. His next of kin will leave the scene to join him in hospital. God help us, he has a serious head injury and they need to operate immediately. A week later he is discharged from the hospital and his insurance company pays the full price for the private medically-equipped plane to bring him back home. The total cost of the medical and transportation was just over £100,000.

JACI’S SAFARI LODGE – MADIKWE PRIVATE GAME RESERVE

Situated in the MALARIA FREE Madikwe Game Reserve. These two exceptional, privately owned lodges, run by Jan and Jaci, together with an outstanding team, will exceed all your safari expectations boasting 75,000 hectares of “Top Ten” territory.

Jaci’s provides the opportunity for the perfect family safari as well as introducing children to the wonders and enjoyment of the African bushveld. Children of all ages are welcome at Jaci’s and are especially catered for.

Family Safaris

Our family safaris have evolved from the specialized children’s safaris, as there was a demand from parents to see and enjoy their children’s wild experiences first hand rather than when they returned to the Lodge, so we had more parents on the specialized safaris than children!! The family safari vehicles are only available at Jaci’s Safari Lodge – now enabling us to put families with children ages 5 – 13 years old on game drives with their parents for the morning and evening game drives. We still have the fabulous “jungle drive” during the day for the very young children 4 yrs and under.

Jungle Drives

“Jungle Drives” are provided for children 4yrs and younger and go out once a day, between the morning and evening game drives. Parents are welcome to join, but they must behave like children! On the “jungle drive” things of interest to children are pointed out, e. g. toothbrush plants, beetles, etc. The information on the drive is aimed at the age/s of the children on the drive. The “jungle drive” is included in the children’s special rate.

Meals

Children 12 yrs and younger will enjoy dinner in the dining room ( as the evening meal is an adult affair ) and enjoy a child oriented menu with things that they prefer, like spaghetti bolognaise, hamburgers, hot dogs, chips and lots of vegetables(to keep Mom happy) etcetera. Children 12 yrs and under sharing with their parents will not be allowed to eat dinner in the boma – the earlier children’s dinner is provided instead. On arrival the chef will ask the children specifically what they like and dislike and use this as a guideline when preparing the children’s menu.

GeneralChild minding is provided free of charge while the parents are on game drive and during dinner.

Children love Jaci’s Safari Lodge – they especially love the idea of “camping” in a tent! One of the things they comment most about are the bugs, they love the variety and are enthralled by these creepy crawlies. Children love the space at Jaci’s Safari Lodge as well as feeling part of the Jaci’s staff family – this sets the pace for how their experience on Safari turns out for them. Jaci’s is fenced off from the Reserve – but it is still the responsibility of the parents to be mindful of potential dangers as Jaci’s is in a wildlife area.

LALIBELA PRIVATE GAME RESERVE – EASTERN CAPE

The middle of the day is time for the family to spend together. Before the adults go out on their afternoon game drive, high tea is served for both adults and children. Young children are looked after by child minders during the adults’ dinner sitting.

I realise now that a more appropriate adornment would have been an image of Kali, the goddess of destruction, because after two miles of clanking, the car gave out one last metallic groan and ground to a halt in the middle of the road. A stony silence filled the cab as our fearless tank driver got out and opened the bonnet to survey the damage. As everywhere in India, there were people in abundance to help us with our problem, and before long another wayward charioteer found the tattered strip of electrical cable hanging under the engine, which indicated that our dynamo was missing. Our frantic eyed driver, Sandjit started pacing around the vehicle, continually cursing his luck and looking excitedly for the missing component. “It can’t have fallen off very far away because I see one of the bolts”, he said, before tumbling into the crowds and bending down to pick something up out of the dust which looked like it might have fallen off a British cannon on route to Peshawar. Suddenly, I was preoccupied by the desperate drivers of the cycle-rickshas who stopped looking for custom, and hardly noticed the man in the white dhoti approaching the car. I suppose he could have been a Swami, or holy man but he looked too disraggled to be of Brahmin caste. He moved with a slight limp, and measured me with a challenging look in his eye.

“Master Sahib, is this what you are looking for? ” he enquired, thrusting the generator in my direction.

“My name is Chandrapal, and please Sahib I am travelling to Calcutta”

“Sahib, could you please aid me in my journey?” he continued.

I looked at the holy man, tall in the crowd, his body covered in the only possessions he owned in the world, his craggy lined face worn like the sculpted staff he carried. He came towards me, grinning. I noticed how his eyes had a different quality, piercing and yet at peace, visually indifferent to the chaos that surrounded us. There was a certain aura about him and I sensed he would be interesting company en route to Calcutta. He lowered his head and looked over at Sandjit who was now busily repairing the taxi.

“This taxi is already fully booked out!” he said, without even bothering to lift his head from underneath the half-open bonnet.

“Please leave! You can see that we have no more place in this vehicle” he continued, scowling at the very thought of mixing trade with compassion. I indicated to the driver, that I would pay for the shaman’s passage, but his eyes widened further and his finger gesticulated excitedly indicating there was to be no more talk about carrying the holy man in the taxi. I then turned back to the poor man and said.

“Sorry, Chandrapal, but he’s the boss!”"I’m sorry you can’t travel with us, but might I take a picture of you?” I respectfully inquired. He agreed, standing away from the car in poised silence, passing no remark on the taxi driver’s intolerance, which we both knew was probably caste driven and the unspoken way of life in India.

“Here are some rupees for the picture!” I continued.

“I never take money, I only accept food in order to live and I beg for your assistance in helping me to go about to my pilgrimages!”

“But why do you not take money?” I queried.

“I do not want to carry money, …it would buy me only trouble, you see”

“If I had your money, then the robbers would follow me and I would not sleep at night”

“But if you had my money you could pay for a taxi to go to Calcutta!” I replied.

“I never buy what kindness can be given from the heart!” he responded.

“Here, take this money from me and get an autoricksha to take you a little further on your way to Calcutta!We stood looking at each other as I passed some money into his aluminium bowl. The holy man began murmuring some haunting chant from a Hindu mantra as I got back into the taxi to continue the rest of my journey. The sun was climbing in the sky as he drifted away, walking behind a passing bullock cart, timing his step to the rhythm of the creaking wheels. From the back window of the taxi I could see him pausing and looking into the begging bowl to count his takings. Then he lifted something high in the air and gave it a fling. My money!

Also, you need to list all the things you want to bring for the trip. Remember to travel light. Travelling alone is not easy; you have to carry all your baggage, so you must only bring the most needed and very important things. Also secure a passport and a visa, so you can cross borders if you want. No hassle and worries while travelling. You must also bring a camera to capture all those sweet memories in your trip. Bring flip flops or shoes for your convenient. Never forget to wear a smile every time and everyday. When you meet different people smile, be friendly. People love a person who is friendly and approachable. Take it down to your notes and put the name of the person who teaches you and let them sign it and also you must have a picture with that person. Let me share this to you, while I was travelling in Asia particularly Philippines. I made all those things. And somehow when I look into the pictures of the people it makes my eyes teary. They are such a very accommodating people and they smiles a lot even some of the children have incomplete teeth.   I learn to love their place. I asked the pump employee to fill my tank for 500 rs but he deliberately poured the petrol for 100 rs and said “oh i heard you wrong” then he started filling my car’s tank and filled it up for 400 marking and said yes i am done . I asked him you have filled for 400 rs only then he starts to fight no i started the meter again and i have filled for 100 rs earlier and now for 400rs and i understood i had been cheated. Beware of these thugs at petrol pump and see zero everytime you go fill up the tank. Advice-travel with eyes open. Earlier the gas station employee would cheat you by not setting up the meter reading at zero. They would divert your mind on other things and start filling the gas and your reading comes out inflated. Beware !open your eyes and travel safely.

Beware of cheats while travelling

One unique thug i met while I was travelling to Kedarnath. The bus stopped at a restaurant (Dhaba) at the highway. Everybody was in a hurry to ease themselves out at loo. Everybody formed a queue and waited for their turn. A lady came fro nowhere and started collecting money for using the facilty. Nobody found it suspicious and she collected Rs 5 from each one of us. It was later discovered that lady was herslf a tourist and she collected money from passengers and took off in her tourist bus after that.

On our way back to Delhi from Kedarnath,we travelled by jeep and planned to get down at Srinagar,Uttarakhand. The jeep driver took us to midway of the route and stopped near a bus that was going to Haridwar,as conductor of the bus told us. Since we had to go toHaridwar from Srinagar ,we were happy to have found a conveyance that was going straight to Haridwar. We would not have to wait for Bus at Srinagar. We hopped on the bus and let the jeep off,giving him all his rent for the jeep. We were awfully surprised when the bus ,we travelled on, stopped at Srinagar. The conductor of the bus started off loading the baggage of the passengers . I asked him “bus was going to Haridwar, why are you telling to get down here”. He smilingly said”Yes!this bus will go to Haridwar but after six hours. ” I had again been robbed of my money as i had to pay for jeep as well to the bus for coming to Srinagar.
