Blogging: A Few Valuable Lessons I’ve Learned From Doing It

October 20th, 2010 Comments off

We all learn new things in two ways. First, we read, listen, and take down notes just like we did at school.   Somewhere along the way, we encounter stuff we think we won’t probably need later in life, but we continue learning because we are required to. This is passive learning.

Then there’s active learning, the type I like better since it gets you involved. You choose to learn about the things you’re interested in or sometimes, you’re forced to learn because you need the input badly. What I like about active learning is that you get information on things that your really need to learn about. And along the way, things become REALLY interesting! You get to a point where it becomes both fun and educational, something I wished school stuff really had.

The great difference between passive and active learning is that the latter allows you to experience things as you learn – that’s why it gets really interesting.   You are made to find out what you need to learn, and that’s where I believe true knowledge starts.   Just like blogging.

A few years ago, I had asked myself, “What the heck is blogging all about?” Well as I learned my way through it, I’ve come to realize that there were so many things about blogging that I couldn’t have learned without actually doing them. Here are a few that I ought to share with you:

You need to create unique posts. There are millions of bloggers in the entire cyberspace and a lot of them are simply blogging to get the market’s attention.   The most successful bloggers I’ve seen didn’t have attention as their main purpose for getting into blogging. Attention just came, because they were providing value that other people needed. And they gave value in their OWN way, from their OWN experiences, and not from somebody else’s.   Make your posts unusually UNIQUE –people love reading unique content. Put some fun into it, too – your readers are people, and they love to be entertained.

To succeed at blogging, you have to enjoy writing. It’s a good thing I do – NOW. I’m not a born writer but discovered that writing can be fun when I started to put in some comments into other blog or forum posts. And when the authors responded, I discovered how easy writing could get. Writing is simply the expression of your thoughts and opinions, so it’s just as easy as talking! When you think of writing that way, the words will simply flow. If you’re not much into writing another good alternative is to do video blogging, which is actually the hottest thing to do these days.

Get traffic from various sources.   Don’t rely entirely on your blog to bring in the traffic for you. While keywords and tags work, it pays to link up to other sources such as other bloggers, through forum participation, Facebook, Twitter, Digg, and other social sites or article directories. Make your blog interactive, so your readers get involved.

You will meet so many fantastic people as you blog. I’ve learned about blogging and other marketing stuff from so many amazing people I’ve met online.   I’ve developed partnerships and affiliations with some of them, and everything started out with blogging. Don’t limit yourself to blog commenting – there are so many ways to do it online and offline.   Write to them or meet up with them if they’re coming to town. Or pay them a personal visit if you travel. Who knows, you might find a great business partner later on!

In a matter of time, it will pick up. And when it does, there’s no way to go but UP! You need to do a lot of work in the beginning – just like everything else in life. But once you start providing value, you will begin to get wider exposures and referrals that will lead to bigger collaborations and partnerships in a matter of time. For some it takes just some months, for others it can take years. But they get there – you just have to be positive and resilient; don’t get easily discouraged and keep the faith!

Offering Valuable Contents to your Readers

October 11th, 2010 Comments off

When it comes to selecting topics for web content, blog posts, and articles, most people have forgotten the factor that matters most: giving value to the readers. Instead, many are choosing keywords based on its popularity and potential revenue. While there is nothing wrong with keyword research and analysis, it should be placed at a bigger context.

For instance, keywords may still be useful but it should be integrated into an information article. The whole article should not be full of fluff and just written around the keyword. Focusing on quantity and the search engines rather than quality and the readers is not a good long-term strategy. If you want your site to break away from keyword-centered writing, below are a few tips that can help you identify interesting topics for your niche:

Resource Lists are Popular

Lists are very popular on the internet. Examples of these kinds of articles include Top 10 Travel Destinations, Top 10 Business Books, and Top 10 Ways to Make Money Online. Readers will be grateful for these kinds of articles because the research has been done for them. They don’t need go from one site to another just to find out, for instance, which business books provide value.

Improve Interaction with Readers

By adding something like polls or slideshows, you encourage reader engagement. People use the web because they want to be involved. Just look at the popularity of social media these days. So instead of posting static articles, think of creative ways to keep their attention and loyalty.

Slideshows lets users click from one slide to the next. It seems like a simple thing but every click on the slideshow is a vote of confidence to your content. Meanwhile, poll surveys provide a medium in which they can share what they think or feel. There are other ways to engage your readers. Adding social media widgets to your blog allows them to easily share your content to others if they find it interesting.

Share News Content

By this, it doesn’t mean that you should rewrite an article that has already been rewritten countless times over in a different way. Readers crave new information whether it is about celebrities, politics, new gadgets, or technology. Depending on the niche you’re in, come up with new ideas. Hunt industry websites for new information.

These sites will contain new studies and developments and blogs have yet to feature them. Don’t wait till other bloggers get ahead of you. You can have avid readers for your site if you successfully do this in a continual basis.

Online Holiday Reviews are Becoming Increasingly Valuable

October 9th, 2010 Comments off

Ever since the birth of the web, people have turned to travel sites to find the best possible deals on flights and hotels. And as the internet’s second generation of sites – popularly known as Web 2. 0 – gathers momentum, the burgeoning number of social network sites, wikis and other communication tools has ensured that holiday reviews have become an integral part of today’s travel sites.

As more and more web users develop their own blogs and user-generated content spreads itself across the web, the importance of first-hand holiday reviews are becoming of paramount importance to prospective travellers before they book their holidays. Whether it’s user-generated video footage on popular online video sites, like YouTube, or holiday resort ratings on travel sites, holiday reviews indicate real user opinion; and in a market that’s becoming overly penetrated by press releases and corporate jargon, first-hand opinions are of crucial value to the discerning travel consumer.

Yahoo!, one of the world’s leading search engines, has long provided a travel forum for people who desire to write reviews on their holiday experiences. From Cornwall to Siberia, Yahoo! Travel’s resources provide prospective travellers with information on the best attractions and restaurants for a particular destination, as voted for by Yahoo! users. Trip Advisor is another popular holiday reviews site that claims to hold over five million traveller reviews and opinions on particular vacation spots. With a ‘rants and raves’ column, as well as the opportunity to post candid photos and interesting video clips, Trip Advisor acts as a working example of the importance of holiday reviews and user opinion to modern day travellers.

Many newspapers in the UK have also realised the importance of online travel reviews; for example, the Guardian, the Times and the Daily Mail all offer comprehensive travel reviews sections, allowing their readers to express their opinions on recent holidays.

However, because anyone can post a review, it’s becoming a growing problem for these travel websites that many holiday destinations are being subject to fake reviews. And, unfortunately, when these fake reviews are negative, it can severely damage the reputation of a particular holiday resort or destination.

Thankfully, many sites are catching on to this growing form of holiday review vandalism and acting upon it swiftly. Superbreak, for example, have just launched a My Holiday Review section, that gives all its customers the option to write a review of their holiday resort, as well as give ratings on key aspects of their holiday, such as the quality of their sleep, breakfast and staff. And since all holiday reviews that are submitted are guaranteed to be from people who have definitely been to that particular destination, this method filters out the bogus travel reviews that are more likely to appear on some other travel review sites.
