Trafalgar Tours Best of Italy, See View Visit

As a European Tour Director with over 2 decades experience and being the owner of Affordable Cruises Tours I like to use my experience to help people understand touring and save people money at the same time with a minimum 10% discount off Trafalgar Tours.

In this article I want to cover Trafalgar Tours: See, View, Visit and Why Not.

To illustrate my point I will use their Best of Italy tour. One of the secrets to knowing what is included in your Trafalgar Tour is the understanding of the terms see, view, visit and Why Not. I have worked as a European Tour Director for over two decades and it’s my experience that the clear understanding of these key terms is paramount in passengers overall satisfaction during their vacation.

Let’s face it, a travel brochure is a sales tool and designed to entice you to book. There are certainly times when travel companies take liberties with the wording in order to get you to purchase their product. Having said that if you know how to interpret the copy on a brochure page you will never be surprised or disappointed. Too often people come away after looking at a brochure expecting much more than they are going to get because no one took the time to explain the difference between these all important items. So that is the aim of this article and video. Please note that see and view are sometimes interchangeable as I will try to explain below.

For the purposes of illustrating see, view, visit and Why Not in interpreting brochure copy I will use one of Trafalgar’s popular Italian itineraries the “Best of Italy”. This is a 14 day tour of the Italian peninsular and one of Trafalgar’s best tours especially for people who have never been to Italy before.

]]>

If you have a Trafalgar brochure you might like to open it up at this tour page or if you are on the Affordable Cruises Tours site please click this link, Best of Italy and open the tour details in another tab. Then you can reference the items I will be talking about as we go.

Visit

Visit is the key with see and view secondary. In the first line of the copy they talk about “with our local guide is a visit to the Sistine Chapel” this means there will be a visit and by association if there are any entrance fees these would be paid by Trafalgar. The copy goes on to talk about a visit to the Colosseum and again any entrances would be paid for you and you would be accompanied by a local guide who will be explaining the visit to you.

See & View

As mentioned above these two items are often interchangeable and sometimes expressed in the day to day copy using similar words. For example the Day 3 of the Best of Italy the copy goes on to say “to overlook the Forum and the Circus Maximus” Here the word “Overlook” takes the place of “See or View” and to check this look at Rome: in the Sightseeing Highlights and you would find “Views of the Forum and Circus Maximus” As there is so much to see in Rome most tour directors and local guides would drive by these but if time permitted like it did on a recent tour I did we stopped at a high point above Circus Maximus and got out of the coach for photos over this ancient arena. Either way this would still fall under the category of See or View.

Why Not, Perhaps, Maybe and Similar Words

The Day 3 copy ends with “this evening why not discover the cities culinary delights”. This is where many people read too much into the brochure and are sometimes disappointed when expectations are not met. With nothing else in the Sightseeing Highlights after the visit to the Colosseum you would consider that Trafalgar’s obligations for the day are concluded. Anything after this would be either at your leisure or there would be an Optional Excursion offered.

Please visit our Trafalgar Tours FAQs page for an article and video about Optional Excursions.

Affordable Cruises Tours are experts on Trafalgar Tours and have over two decades experience with them. On most tours we start our clients off with a 10% discount and in many instances we are able to save our clients 20% and more off the regular cost of Trafalgar Tours.

Visit the USA water park in Williamsburg, Virginia

Visit the water park U.S. in Williamsburg, Virginia

spent five days at Busch Gardens and Water Country USA and had a great time at both parks. We bought our tickets on the website of dollars each and print the tickets before leaving our home. Parking was $ 0.00 for each day parked in their lot, which I think is outrageous. So if you intend to leave the park and return the same day as the best save receipts, and that will make you pay again if they are not.

really did not want to go to the water park during a visit to Williamsburg, but soon changed his mind once we got there. I was really impressed with aquatic park. You may know how to get to the whole journey will take you to the variety of attractions. Food is expensive, but what do you do when you go to eat at these places? You can buy a cup of memories and learn to perform all day and you can even bring back another day and still charging. And get this also discovered that some people at Busch Gardens and fill again, tell me if this is not the case.

If you want to get water shoes that I recommend doing anything other than their water. You can buy sporting goods in any store for only eight dollars for the payment of $ 14 in the water park. They are very comfortable and I feel good on your feet. My wife wanted me to buy them, but she said she was happy that I did what her feet were protected while wondering in the park all day.

While in the store, also bought a machine that could put waterproof bracelet that our staff and our driver’s license, had a little money, paper money and our key to our room hotel. I put it around my neck where I could keep an eye on it and not have to worry about if it was wet or lost.

goods not our clothing not only our bathing suits and coverups. Although we have made some things with us as our pocket, towel, sunscreen and especially our all to the left of the weather on our chairs because people do not seem interested in nothing more than having a day at the park water.

The whole family had a blast at the Water Country USA. We went in August and it was too hot to do anything else in Williamsburg during the day. The wave pool was amazing and kept us entertained as we relaxed and cool throughout the day. Our children made water slides and even the waiting time was not too long if it was full of something that day. Once we acquire a place to put our business remained in the water almost all day

Although I was a little uncomfortable leaving our business where any which could have if they had to know who could have rented a cottage would have been great, I should not have to keep an eye on things throughout the day.

The food was very pricy we spend 0.00 for 2 hot dogs and a small bag of chips. I want us to bring coolers into the waterpark. It would be a great place for a picnic, but just leave the car and grabbed a snack and wet back in the park where they were stationed close enough

Everyone we

saw was having a wonderful time, with the exception of a couple who complained of a couple who brought food in the park when no one else is allowed. They brought bread and jar of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches in packets next to them they had to eat a meal purchased. To make things worse for their children were allergic to peanuts and they were afraid that their children end up with part of it and have to go to hospital. They were really upset when told his security and his response was they do not want to interrupt your lunch right? I assume your security team does not life-threatening food allergies as severe.

Other than that I was one of the greatest vacation I had a long time and although they cost a fortune, I wish to thank Busch Gardens and Water Country UAS for a wonderful time in its parks.

Best Places to Visit in Las Vegas

Best Places to Visit in Las Vegas

When traveling to Las Vegas, even the most veteran travelers will have to admit that it is practically impossible to see and do everything the city has to offer. It would take months, if not years, to experience all that is Las Vegas, so savvy travelers will take the time to do a little homework beforehand and scope out the best places to visit in Las Vegas. As you plan your next Vegas trip, make sure your “things to see” list includes these locations:

Bellagio

The Bellagio Hotel is one of the places you must experience on a trip to Las Vegas. It is one of only two certified five diamond hotels in the city, and everything inside the towering structure is both grandiose and spectacular. A massive ceiling skylight lets natural light into the entry way, and fountains, glass sculptures, and fine art are found around every corner.

Attractions within Bellagio include the “O” by Cirque du Soleil, a mesmerizing acrobatics performance, the Bellagio Conservatory, a beautiful garden for those who want to escape the city scene for a moment, and a luxury shopping center. The Bellagio Fountains, which are just outside of the building, are one of the most spectacular nighttime attractions in the entire city. Keep in mind that you must be 18 to enter this prestigious hotel, so you cannot visit with kids in tow.

Mirage Hotel

The Mirage Hotel is one of the landmarks of Las Vegas. Outside of the hotel you can watch the famous volcano erupt. This volcano is made of lights, fire and fountains and erupts every hour between dusk and midnight.

Inside Mirage, visitors can experience a variety of natural wonders. The wall behind the front desk is not a wall at all, but actually a live coral reef aquarium. Here guests can watch sharks, stingrays, and beautiful tropical fish swim behind lighted glass. The aquarium houses over 1,000 live animals.

A highlight of a trip to Mirage is a visit to Siegfried & Roy’s Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat. Here guests can come face to face with exotic animals, including white lions, panthers, white tigers, and leopards. Of course, bottlenose dolphins are also found there, and each habitat is housed in a lush, garden atmosphere.

Circus Circus

If you are visiting Vegas with kids, you must visit Circus Circus. This resort features a live circus and carnival midway that is open all day. Guests can watch free performances from acrobats in the circus tent and play for prizes at the games that surround the center ring. A highlight of a trip to Circus Circus is the Adventuredome, a large indoor amusement park complete with water rides, roller coasters, and traditional amusement park rides. This is a great place for the kids to burn off some energy, and admission is free. You simply pay for the rides you wish to experience.

These are just three of the many attractions you must visit while you are in Las Vegas. They did not include such icons as Excalibur, Paris Las Vegas, and the Fremont Street Experience in Downtown Vegas. The attractions in Sin City are simply too many to list, so do your homework before you leave to ensure that you see everything you wish to on your next Las Vegas vacation.

Visit Paradise with Help from a Travel Agency

October 24th, 2010 Comments off

These days, there are multiple ways to plan the perfect vacation. When it comes to finding exactly what you are looking for, including where you want to go and what you want to do, planning a vacation can sometimes be overwhelming. Unfortunately, with all of the options available, booking a trip can sometimes be difficult no matter where you want to visit. Therefore, finding an exotic location in paradise is an attainable feat with the help from a qualified travel agency. Investing in a travel agent to help plan your next trip will not only relieve you from unnecessary stress, but will also help ensure you that you are getting the best deals and prices available for all of your necessary travel accommodations. A professional travel agency will be able to help you out in many more ways than you might think.

First and foremost, a travel agency will be able to help you figure out which paradise location is perfect for you and your family or friends to visit. There are many exotic and must-see island locations which are excellent in terms of sun, sand, and beauty. Many of these islands of paradise can be hard to find on your own due to their locations. Planning a trip to one of these striking destinations can sometimes be tricky, and it is important for you to get all of the pertinent information to determine which destination is the best fit for your preferences. A travel agency can tell you which paradise is good for a single person searching for other singles, which place is best for a couple on their honeymoon, and which destination is perfect for that yearly family getaway. A travel agency can also help you plan out unique excursions for you to partake in once you get there as well as all the best places to eat and visit.

There are many other reasons to use a travel agency when you are planning out a trip to paradise. A qualified travel agency can help you determine which locations are the safest areas for you to go to. A good travel agent will have an abundance of information when it comes to government travel restrictions and warnings as well as top news stories for that region. It is a very good idea to work with a travel agency so that you can figure out which of your desired travel locations will be the safest and most enjoyable for you and your party. While this is information that you might be able to find on your own, it might be difficult amongst all of the other pertinent details you need to remember to check. Therefore, it is always best to go with a travel agency due to the fact that they will be able to give you all of the information you are looking for.

There are many other reasons to prove that your trip to paradise will be best served when planned by a travel agency. Travel agencies are without a doubt going to be able to have access to the best deals for you to take advantage of. A travel agency is an institution that will have access to flight and hotel room deals as well as discounts on excursions and tourist attractions once you reach your destination. Not only that, but travel agencies will also have a good amount of advice for you regarding where to eat, what to see, and what activities you can enjoy during your much needed retreat. When listing the various perks that you can obtain from working with a travel agent, it is easy to see why you should invest in a company when planning your next trip to paradise.

A trip to paradise should be a time for fun and relaxation. While on your vacation you will want to be able to sit back, relax, and enjoy the time that you have together with your partner, family, or friends. No matter where you are going or what you are doing, a travel agency will be able to make sure that all of your needs are met so that you do not have to worry about anything except which cocktail you want to try next. When planning a trip to paradise, you do not want the experience tainted by frustrations and problems that might arise during the sometimes complicated planning process. Turning to a qualified travel agency to help you plan your next trip is a great idea. They can help to take your stresses away, while allowing you to enjoy every minute of your trip.

Detroit Travel: An Architectural Walking Tour of Detroit and a Visit to the Eastern Market

October 14th, 2010 Comments off

On my second day in Detroit I got a great start to the day with a scrumptious breakfast at the just reopened Cadillac Hotel: a strawberry waffle with whipped cream. That’s one menu item I can’t resist. I was enjoying the sleek décor and pleasant ambience of the Boulevard Room restaurant of this historic hotel which has just been restored to glory after being shuttered for 24 years.

Shortly after 8 am I was joined by Bob Goldsmith of Detroit Tour Connections who was about to take me on an architectural walking tour of Detroit. Bob is a Detroit native and a true enthusiast of the Motor City. In addition to his full-time profession as a lawyer, Bob dedicates his time to providing scheduled weekend walking tours, regular Wednesday walks as well as customized walking and bus tours for groups. Many of his tours are centered around specific themes, such as downtown churches, historic hotels, cool bars, places with unique art etc. His bus tours focus on such topics as Detroit’s ethnic enclaves, the city’s sports history, or the recent revitalization that has been taking place in Detroit.

To admire some of Detroit’s outstanding architecture we did not have to go far since the intersection of Washington Boulevard and Michigan Avenue offers a great view of many historic buildings. To the north of the hotel are the 13-story Book Building from 1917 and the 36-story Book Tower from 1926, which were both designed by famous Detroit architect Louis Kamper. The 47-story Penobscot Building was Detroit’s highest building until the construction of the Renaissance Centre in 1977. Designed by renowned architect Wirt Rowland and opened in 1928, it features an H-shaped design to allow light into the offices. The Penobscott Building is connected to two earlier Penobscot Buildings dating to 1905 and 1916 with a shared lobby and shared access to restaurants and various stories on the lower levels. Looking east of Michigan Avenue we got a great view of this famous setback skyscraper which also was an inspiration for the Empire State Building, opened three years later and built by many of the same construction workers that also worked on the Penobscot. Walking down on Washington Boulevard, we had a good look at some of Detroit’s architectural landmarks: the 1923 Lafayette Building sits east at the intersection of Lafayette and Washington and has been empty for many years. A building next to the Lafayette Building holds two famous Detroit landmarks: the Lafayette Coney Island and the American Coney Island, both offering Coney Island style hotdogs. In Detroit and other parts of Michigan, the term “Coney Island” is not only used for the hot dog but also for the diner-like food establishments that serve this popular food.

We walked by the austere Federal Court Building, or more properly named the Theodore Levin United States Courthouse, a sleek moderne style structure which sits next to the Detroit Free Press Building, an Art Deco design by Albert Kahn which opened in 1925. Then we headed east on Griswold Street where we admired the imposing entrance of the Penobscot Building.

On the other side of the Street is the Guardian Building, originally called the Union Trust Building, one of the most stunning examples of Art Deco design. Featuring abundant Aztec-style decoration, amazing mosaic and tilework, this 1929 masterpiece used to be referred to as the “Cathedral of Finance”. The exterior domes of the Guardian Building feature decorations made by the famous Pewabic Pottery Company, and tile, limestone and terra cotta adorn the outside brickwork which consists of 1. 8 million red bricks, an unusual cladding material for a skyscraper. The granite base features carvings by renowned architectural sculptor Corrado Parducci whose magnificent work also adorns the Buhl Building, the Penobscot Building, the Masonic Temple and many other landmarks in Detroit.

The interior of the Guardian Building is stunning, particularly the former banking hall with its three story vaulted ceiling adorned by multi-colour Aztec ornamentation and Rockwood pottery. The building is accented by different types of marble, and for the particularly rare Numidian marble architect Wirt Rowland went to Africa to reopen a quarry that had been closed for 30 years.

The southern end of the cathedral-like space features an oversize mural with a map of Michigan. Today this space is used as a retail space as the current owners decided that it was important to turn this area back into publicly accessible space. What a great move for architecture lovers! I am glad they did; as you can probably tell, the Guardian Building had quickly became my favourite. A coffee shop anchors the centre of the former banking hall, and we ended up chatting to Shawn Santo, the café’s proprietor who also owns the Pure Detroit retail store on the east side of the building. Leaving the Guardian Building behind, we strolled south to Hart Plaza, Detroit’s Civic Centre, also the location of the 1701 landing of Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, the founder of Detroit. This French explorer played an important role in the history of New France when he landed on the shores of the Detroit River and founded a settlement by the name of Fort Ponchartrain du Détroit. The word “Detroit” itself is derived from the phrase “le détroit du Lac Érie – the strait of Lake Erie”. By 1765 Detroit was the largest city between Montreal and New Orleans. Detroit changed hands from the French to the British in 1760, and then from the British to the United States in 1796. Lots of history unfolded right here, in the area of today’s Hart Plaza.

Approaching this space I was impressed by a giant suspended fist – the Joe Louis Fist Sculpture, created by artist Robert Graham to honour Detroit’s legendary boxer Joe Louis. The hard-surface open area of Hart Plaza holds a number of outdoor installations: a giant circle-shaped monument to the labour movement features quotes by famous labour and human rights leaders including Nelson Mandela as well as a fountain dedicated to Horace E. Dodge.

Sitting next to the walking path on the river’s edge is the Underground Railroad Memorial, “Gateway to Freedom”, designed by sculptor Ed Dwight and dedicated in October of 2001. Ed Dwight himself is an interesting story: a former Air Force Test Pilot, he is also America’s first African American Astronaut Trainee as well as a successful entrepreneur. Dwight’s sculpture highlights that Detroit was an important site in the Underground Railroad, the network of secret routes and safe houses that took 19th century African-American slaves to freedom. A similar statue by the same artist is located on the other side of the Detroit River, in Windsor, Canada. Detroit was an important point of debarcatation for thousands of enslaved Africans in their quest to escape to safety and freedom. Heading back into the city from the waterfront we passed by the “Spirit of Detroit”, a large bronze statue that was dedicated in 1958. This statue is often dressed up in sports jerseys when Detroit’s professional sports teams make it into the playoffs. Up the street on Woodward Avenue is Campus Martius Park, one of Detroit’s most popular outdoor spaces since its opening in 2004. Local residents had expressed a strong desire for a greenspace in downtown Detroit, particularly since Hart Plaza is a primarily hard-surfaced area. A Michigan Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument anchors the south side of Campus Martius Park; the centre holds a café, outdoor seating and a green space that is used as a skating rink in the winter. The north side of Campus Martius Park is highlighted by the new Compuware Headquarters which opened in 2003. Compuware, one the USA’s most important software firms, relocated its head office to its new location, a successful example of business relocation into the downtown financial district.

From here we headed to the lobby of the David Stott Building, another Art Deco skyscraper dating from 1929. Designed by Donaldson and Meier, its 37 stories feature a reddish granite base, brick, marble and limestone as well as sculptures by Corrado Parducci. We then crossed over to Washington Boulevard where we walked north past several historic buildings, including the headquarters of the Archdiocese of Detroit and a Catholic church built in 1930.

At the north end of Washington we saw a grouping of historic skyscrapers including the recently renovated Kales Building, the David Broderick Tower and the David Whitney Building, many of which have been converted into apartments. This area also used to be the home of the renowned Statler Hotel and the Hotel Tuller which were demolished in 2006 and 1992 respectively. Because of its many abandoned and demolished buildings this area is often referred to as “skyscraper graveyard”. After concluding our downtown tour Bob and I drove a few minutes east to the Eastern Market, Detroit’s historic market near Gratiot and Mack Avenues. The first farmer’s market in Detroit was opened in 1841 downtown, and additional markets were opened in the 1850s, including one on the site of the current Eastern Market. The current outdoor sales sheds date back all the way to 1891 while the surrounding brick Victorian buildings house many additional food and other retailers. Today, the Eastern Market is the largest historic public market district in the United States.

This Saturday morning the Eastern Market was hustling and bustling, and all sorts of produce, meat, spices and other products were on sale. On average the market attracts 45,000 locals and out-of-towners every Saturday. A cooking demonstration was underway and several musicians were performing live for the crowds. Halloween pumpkins, gourds and chrysanthemums were on display everywhere, providing a colourful reminder of the fall season.

Following our brief visit to the market Bob dropped us off at the Bucharest Deli where we had a delicious lunch with chicken and bean soups and vegetarian shawarmas. Appropriate strengthened after a tasty meal, we were ready for our next adventure: a walking tour of Brush Park, a historic neighbourhood in transition.

Why Visit Europe

October 14th, 2010 Comments off

Most Americans never leave their native country during their lifetimes. Most often, the reason is largely financial. Traveling outside the country is much more expensive than traveling within the United States. Airfare costs more, lodging can often cost more, and there just seem to be more costs here and there associated with traveling abroad. Going to Europe or a foreign country also involves more planning, time which many Americans just don’t seem to have.

If Americans do manage to cross a major ocean, most often it is to visit Europe. This is because Europe is filled with developed countries, in which many of the people speak English well. If you are an American thinking about whether or not to visit Europe, here are a few points which may sway your decision:

See A Different Culture

The cultures of the European countries are quite different than the United States. The energy level of the people, the food, the customs, the city density, and the architecture of the cities are just some of the many differences between the lifestyle in European countries and America. By visiting Europe, you will see a different sort of lifestyle, which will give you a greater worldview.

Many of the world’s largest, most historic cities are in Europe. You have to ask yourself if you really want to go your entire life without seeing a city like Paris or London, which are quite different than Tulsa or Los Angeles.

A Sense Of Adventure

Visiting a foreign country can be thrilling. You don’t need to stay in hostels or go backpacking to get this sort of thrill. Whether or not it is figuring out what the different food is, navigating in an uncertain area, or just using a different currency, going abroad can infuse yourself with a new sense of adventure. Just when life starts seeming dull, going abroad can make life seem fresh and exciting again. Few people won’t find visiting Europe for the first time at least a little adventurous.

Relaxation

Europe has many beaches and other resorts. Some Americans enjoy vacationing in the Southern Spain or Southern France. If it is your first time to Europe though, it is more worthwhile to visit some of the major cities, since you can relax and visit a resort in America.

Appreciate America More

By seeing other countries, you’ll appreciate some of the creature comforts you take for granted in the United States. Whether its getting free refills on soda (most countries do not do this), wide roads, or Taco Bell, home will seem that much sweeter when you get back.

Marketers should consider employment status when allocating resources for targeting consumers. Full time employees make as many daily contacts as part time employees and stay-at-homers combined! A consumer package goods manufacturer might consider sampling its products in or near their targeted consumers’ workplace rather than, or in addition to, traditional in-home sampling. For purposes of the study, “contact” was defined as “any type of direct communication a person has with another person including spoken to in-person, by phone, or written via email, or instant/text message. “ Stay-at-homers tend to make more daily visits to chat rooms, message boards, free email services, forums, and any information station they can easily find. Including web site addresses and promotion codes in marketing efforts, making it easy to pass this information along online, is a tactic that works well with this group of people provided there is perceived value. Marketers often use household income of $75,000 as an affluence threshold but there was no apparent increase in word of mouth or (WOM) activity for people with incomes from $75,000 to $90,000. The results showed acceleration in WOM likelihood for households earning $100,000 or more. As expected, technology has a significant influence on how different generations foster WOM. Here’s a glimpse into the future, as well as today. Younger generations are creating personal online media to a greater extent, with nearly half (49%) of Gen Y having built a website and one quarter having their own blog. When reaching out to their peers, one-quarter visit chat rooms or message boards daily and 17% of their contact activity is done through instant or text messaging. Gen X and Boomers tend to use email more often and are more likely to spread positive WOM. These groups are ripe for viral email campaigns. An overlooked and interesting area for marketers is reaching Silver Birds through message boards and chat rooms. They have more activity in those areas than Boomers and nearly equal activity to Gen X. This is likely due to their desire to reconnect with family and friends, and to discuss health, medical, and other issues of aging with peers and professionals. At this time of their life they tend to go on cruises, flights, and lots of different locations all over the world, since most of them worked all their life and now have the time and most have the cash to do these types of travel. Duty-Free Travel Information The European Union, Iceland, Norway, Japan, Singapore, Australia and other countries have implemented new regulations regarding liquids in carry on bags. As a result, there are potential implications for passengers who purchase liquid duty-free items (e. g. perfume and liquor) while traveling to and from international destinations. Because many duty-free shops in other countries are located before the security checkpoint, all liquid duty-free items purchased in those airports will be placed in special sealed tamper-evident bags in order to be permitted through those countries’ security checkpoints. The tamper-evident bag is not currently accepted through U. S. checkpoints. To avoid the risk of having to abandon your liquid duty free items in the U. S. and abroad, please follow the guidelines below. Please note: these security measures only apply to liquid, gel, and aerosol duty free items. For passengers traveling to an international destination from the United States: Duty-free purchases of liquids of any size from shops in the US are permitted if you have a nonstop flight to an international destination. If you have a connecting flight in Europe, Japan or another international destination, US duty-free liquid purchases in containers larger than three ounces will not be permitted through security checkpoints because they will not be in the an approved tamper-evident bag. Note: If you purchase a liquid duty-free item in the US you will not be able to get a tamper evident bag for it before going through international checkpoints. For passengers returning to the United States from an international destination: On nonstop flights bound for the US, duty free liquids purchased at an international airport will only be permitted it they are delivered to the aircraft for passenger pickup, bought on the plane or purchased after the security checkpoint. If you are flying to the US and have a connecting flight, duty-free liquids that meet US requirements will NOT be permitted through US security checkpoints. If you have a connecting flight, liquid duty free purchases must be placed in your checked baggage. Since you will be required to reclaim your checked bags prior to passing through customs inspection, you can place duty-free liquids into your bags and recheck them for your connection. This information will help you as you go from place to place around the world. Some countries will not allow any sort of sprays, fruits, nuts, or liquors so be aware of the laws of the land to which you are going to so you will be able to bring your purchase into that country. When traveling to an international destination with a connection, buy your duty-free liquid items on the last leg of your trip. In Europe, Japan and other countries that use the tamper-evident bag, passengers should not open the bag before the security checkpoint or else the duty free contents may be seized. When returning from an international destination on a connecting flight in the US, use your time in customs to place any duty-free liquid items in your checked bags. Here are a few guidelines for carry-on luggage dimensions. Please keep in mind that you should verify with the specific airline you are using for carry-on sizes and rules. U. S. – Most U. S. domestic, non commuter airlines dimensions are 22″x14″x9″. Many allow a second smaller item as well such as a tote, cosmetic bag, briefcase, etc. International dimensions are 18″x14″x9″. This is a recommended carry-on size and will very from airline to airline. General Luggage PoliciesNote that when maximum size measurements are shown as a total number of inches (e. g. 45″) this is the total of the length, width and height of the piece. There are standard sets of dimensions that go to make up these totals (for example, 22 x 14 x 9 is the standard for 45″) and if you have a bag that is an unusual shape but still within the total number of inches, you may find it being rejected. Many luggage stores sell suitcases described as ‘carry-on’, but these suitcases are sometimes larger than the size most airlines will accept. The safe maximum size is 45″, in the form of a 22″ x 14″ x 9″ bag. Some airlines allow up to as much as 55″, but most do not. Not only do luggage stores and manufacturers not always tell you if their bag is legally sized or not, but they also frequently miss-measure their bag. Their measurements generally are for the inside of the main compartment, and assume that any external pockets are of zero thickness, rather than stuffed full of things (which can easily add another inch or more) and ignore any external framing such as wheels and carry handle (which can also add another couple of inches). If you should be very unlucky and find yourself forced to try and squeeze your carry-on into an unforgiving luggage template by the gate, even one extra inch – if your bag is already at the maximum – will be enough to mean it doesn’t fit and you have to check the bag. So you get on board with your large but legal sized carry on item. However, what happens if there is no space remaining in any of the overhead bins, and you’re forced to place it under the seat in front of you? Although your carry on item might be within the size guidelines issued by the airline, that does not guarantee it will fit under the seat in front of you! It seems that the space under the seat in front of you is getting smaller and smaller, particularly with some airlines (most notably on international flights) adding bulky electronic boxes under each seat to control the at-seat video entertainment systems, and with more closely spaced seats that are, themselves, thinner than before. Even if there isn’t a blocking box, due to the design of the seat frame and supports, you’ll find there might be the least amount of space under the aisle seat, a bit more space under the wing seat, and most space underneath the center seat. At last – something good to say about getting stuck in a middle seat! Even if, in theory, your bag could fit under the seat in front, you might find the geometry of the space and angles is such that you can’t manage to fit the bag into the space. For many reasons – your own convenience, and courtesy to fellow passengers, you should focus more on bringing the smallest carry-on you truly need rather than the largest carry-on you think you need! All airlines place limits on the number, the size, and the weight of what you can carry on to a flight with you. Generally US domestic airlines are fairly liberal with these limits, and rarely choose to enforce them. Traveler’s survey In a June 04 survey of Travel Insider Newsletter readers, 80% of readers who admitted exceeding the official carry-on allowances said they did so with no problems. Of course, ‘no problems’ is a relative term, and if you’re honestly abiding by the airline requirements and unable to fit your own smaller carry-on into an overhead bin due to the presence of massive outsized bags filling up all the space, you might have a different perspective on this! 94. 5% of Travel Insider readers say they do not exceed carry-on limits. Personal Items such as a Briefcase, Camera, Handbag/Purse, Laptop (in carry bag), and other items not exceeding 36″ in total dimension, Reading Matter, Small book-bag style backpack, and an Umbrella. In addition to generally allowing you to carry on one bag plus one personal item, many airlines may also allow you to carry on other items such as coats, hats and other ‘outer clothing’ items, ‘assistive devices’ such as crutches/canes and wheelchairs, diaper bags and approved child safety seats. Unlike checked luggage, where you can pay extra to carry heavier or bigger or more items, with carry on, there are no extra charges. If the airline enforces its carry-on rules, then your only option is to have the disallowed items checked. International flights often have much stricter carry-on policies, particularly with regard to the weight of carry-on bags. Although most domestic airlines have no limit on carry-on bag weight, internationally, you will find that some airlines set such ridiculously low carry-on weight limits (sometimes as little as 11 lbs) that the weight of an empty carry-on bag is more than the total weight you’re allowed to take with you! You need to be aware of these rules, or else the next time you see someone desperately unpacking and repacking their luggage on the floor by the check in counter, that person might be you! International airlines may have smaller size limits on your carry on bags, too. If you want a bag that is always accepted on both domestic and international flights, you’ll need to choose a size or two smaller than the maximum allowable domestic sizes. If your flight is on a really small plane, you might find that your luggage allowances for both checked and carry-on items are substantially reduced. Top 3 places to visit in Mexico City

October 9th, 2010 Comments off

For the 2 years I spent living and working in Mexico, I spent most of my time in Mexico City. Mexico City is a very big city, with a population of 111,211,789 (July 2009 est. ), according to The World Fact Book. And although there are many great places to see while there, there are too many to write in this blog. So, here are a few that really caught my eye and should be on your list if your planning on visiting. 1. Coyoacan- Coyoacan is a very artsy, hippy, colonial-era suburb noted for its beautiful town center. It has cobble stone streets, old mansions, and several of the cities most interesting museums. This was also the home of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. Coyoacan has a hippy feel with a very popular market every weekend in the town center(Centro de Coyoacan). At night, during the Christmas season there is an incredible slide show of beautiful Holiday themed art that is projected on the outside wall of the church in the town center. 2. Colonia Condessa-This area of Mexico City is a more upscale area and is very well known for some of the city’s hippest cafe’s, restaurants, nightclubs, and bars. The neighborhood is also well known for its parks and restored Art Deco buildings. From upscale restaurants, off-beat shops, art galleries, fashion shows, and nightclubs, you can pretty much find it all here. 3. Polanco- Similar in some ways to Condessa, Polanco is also a very upscale area of Mexico City. Here in Polanco you have a street named Mazaryk. This street is like the Rodeo Dr. of Beverly Hills, so be prepared to spend some pesos because Mazaryk is home to some of the best designers in the world. Other than shopping, there is also the Hard Rock Cafe, the W Hotel, and the Mexico City Museum located nearby. Most everything is within walking distance, the people are very friendly, and the area is very safe. I spent much time in all three of these neighborhoods in Mexico and I always felt safe and never had any problems. And I definitely stand out with my blond hair and blue eyes. However, when traveling in a foreign country one should always be aware of his/her environment and take the necessary precautions. In a later post I will talk about the safety and overall do’s and dont’s while traveling in Mexico. Some other places I would like to mention in passing, only because I did not spend too much time there. They are, San Angel and the Centro Historico. San Angel is very nice and has a great market on the weekends and the Centro Historico has an incredible museum where I saw a wonderful Diego Rivera exhibit, and not to mention the architecture. Oh! I almost forgot. Mexico City was built on the ruins of the Ancient City Tenochtitlan, which was built on water and was the seat of the Aztec Empire. If you go to the Centro you can view a portion of the ruins and a large-scale model of how the empire looked in the 15th Century. I thought this was VERY cool and was happy I got to see it. So, that’s about it, feel free to send in any questions or comments, until then. . . Happy Travels!
